Most dance classes focus on ballet, and only girls take them. My 6 year old DS would benefit from a dance class that focuses on fun and rhythm. He doesn't have the best coordination in the world, and this was suggested to us by his former physical therapist as good dance classes can really help with mild motor planning issues. Thanks, everyone! |
Reston Conservatory has a boys class. |
Hip hop classes usually have the most boys, compared to jazz, tap and of course ballet. I think it's the least intimidating style as the movements are not so feminine.
A kids' Capoeira class might be worth looking into. It combines Brazilian dance, martial arts, acrobatics, sometimes they even learn to play the drum. Lots of fun for boys...in fact the classes I've seen are mostly boys. |
Maryland Youth Ballet in silver spring has sections just for boys, it is ballet, though. Another, similar sport to consider might be gymnastics. I believe Silver Stars has some all boy classes, but it has been I while since I looked |
my son took a hip hop class with montgomery county recreation, and he really loved it. if you are considering certain dance studios, ask to schedule a trial class. we did that for a private studio, and my son was the youngest and couldn't pick up some of the moves...it seemed to be geared toward an older crowd (i believe it was 6-10)...the county class was 5-8, which i think was a better fit for my son. |
??? THen where do male dancers come from? Are they hatched as adults? |
Ballet class. It is good physical training - many end up there because the mom-dad danced, had to take sister, chose to try it for social/artistic or to enhance flexibility/physicality for a sport and then liked it[usually older]. Hip-Hop --- just plain fun and want to learn it. Can use moves in real life. |
