Seriously? OP, your baby is not going to go through withdrawal symptoms from 1 oz of coffee and milk each day |
why wouldn't he??? Say the baby weighs 25lbs. I experience this and I only drink one cup a day with a ton of cream and I weigh 100lbs more! |
Coffee, well most caffeinated drinks, easily dehydrate so be sure to follow up with a sippy cup of water.
I would keep the coffee as an occassional sweet treat (everything in moderation). He'll become a Starbucks junkie by age 3 otherwise. OP - is it a weak coffee like Folgers or the strong bold coffee like Mayorga or Starbucks? Also - how much coffee are you talking about - 6 oz (1/2 cup) or like a 1/2 ounce (just a sip)? Caffeine also elevates the heart rate (which is why runners will sometimes drink a little bit before they race) and acts as a diuretic. |
I've never given my kids coffee, but in reading this post I suddenly remembered my g'mother giving me coffee with rice in it. She'd sweeten it and I'd drink the whole cup! No wonder I'm so short. |
Good news from a site linked above:

So zumbamama's g'mother is off the hook. |
I like you PP! |
I would just be concerned about caffeine....even one ounce. One ounce builds the benchmark level in his system, so if DC doesnt get that amount each day at the proscribed time, then withdrawl sets in.I'm not saying detox, but withdrawl does set in.... |
Note that the responses after 10:30 pm and before 8:00 am were mostly positive... wonder if that'll change at midday? ![]() (FWIW, I don't think an ounce or too will hurt too much, but caffeine is not good for your health, and I'd be concerned about setting up habits for high school and beyond.) |
My husband grew up in Germany. As a child, they drank Kindel Kaffee. Basically hot milk with coffee. Like the other PP, the ratio changed the older they got.
He is 6 ft 4 and completely normal. Does you son like milk and sugar in it? |
I drink one six ounce cup of coffee each morning. If I don't have that cup, by 2 PM I have a screaming headache. I am a 190 lb male. |
OP, my mom gave me small amounts of cafe con leche as a young kid to hopefully stunt my growth and I loved it and still do. Based upon my bone growth I was expected to be at least 6 foot. I am only 5 ft 8 in so perhaps it helped. Regardless, I loved it and only had it in the morning. I was not hyper either. |
Grew up with cafe con leche every day at breakfast. It is still the only way I drink coffee. My husband laughs and insists it is not coffee at all considering it is a huge mug of warm milk with sugar and about two tablespoons of expresso in it.
My kids love it too! |
OP, could you cold-brew some decaf for your kid once a week or so, then add that to milk?
My kid loves coffee, too, but he only gets decaf. Making him his own drip is a hassle, but making concentrate is easy. |
I used to drink coffee and diet cokes like they were going out of style and I never once had a withdrawal headache. Even when I quit cold turkey. |
I grew up eating "continental breakfasts," which normally consisted of warm milk (in a large cup or bowl), sweetened with regular sugar and flavored with a shot of espresso. I'd dunk a homemade biscotti into it -or, for fellow Italians out there, an "S" cookie!
Of course, by "Amerian" standards, I was an oddball b/c I wasn't eating Trix or Coco Krispies each morning, but I survived. |
