I was inspired by the “strangest gift” thread (LOL) and wanted to see what were some of the best, most memorable gifts you’ve received from family and in laws.
Looking for ideas between SILs, BIL-SIL, and MIl-DIL since the holidays are approaching. |
My children |
My child (adoption) but that's not a gift.
Strange but still used and appreciated from my MIL - ice tea spoons (don't drink ice tea but great for milk shakes), can opener (it works so well) and a few other kitchen things I'd never think of. She had very limited money but always tried to be thoughtful. She died a year ago so its even more appreciated now. |
I love our doormat. It's from Bed, Bath and Beyond and the last name initial one with a big black rubber mat under it but it's so pretty! Great gift for under $30. |
I had my eye on this piece of antique furniture that I loved, but I'd just moved and couldn't justify the cost. I went back to the store a few weeks later because I couldn't stop thinking about it, but it had already been sold. I was so bummed.
Fast forward a couple months, my BF had bought the piece and had them hold it until Christmas. Amazing surprise and I still love the piece of furniture! |
A large 16” blue willow (not sure) bowl. It’s an antique and my in-laws got it for $3. It sits out on my dining table and I admire it every night. It’s such a great shape and the design is on the inside which I hadn’t seen before in other bowls like this. I’m pretty hard to buy for so when someone really knocks it out of the park it sticks with me. |
Car detailing - $200 gift - but I loved driving in what felt like a brand new car. |
An IL knows that I like silly little trinkets with a certain cartoon character on them. Other relatives roll their eyes at it but when she finds special things with that character and I feel like an indulged little kid in the best way.
We get my ILs fancy chocolate from a store they don’t have near them and that they would be embarrassed to spend their own money on. We buy them an extra box each time so they can share one with guests and show off and still have treats for themselves. I once got a Zyliss microplane from an IL. I would never have thought to buy one but I use it 3x/week. |
The one that's brought me the most joy is the iPod my brother got me. Music makes me SO happy. The two that I've used for literally over 30 years? My dad gave me a calculator (I don't know how it hasn't died and I hope saying that doesn't jinx it) right off his desk - not as a present but I still use it to this day. Also, when I was around 11 or 12 he got me a little kit with pink nail things - a nail file, clippers, etc. To this day I still use the pink nail clippers. |
The best present I received from my high earning sibling was when she finally respected my boundaries that she needs to stop sending "gifts." Let me tell you the gifts she would send for birthdays or just because she is oh so "generous" that she expected endless gratitude for:
-Clothing with holes and stains from ebay -Clothing for my kids that is dryclean only with a note that said she expected me to save it in pristine condition in case she ever had children so it could be passed down -A second hand necklace completely twisted in knots with a stone missing -A massive toy for one of my kids in about 10000 little pieces where you would need to hire a handyman/woman to put together because even my handy-husband felt it would take hours to put together For any gift she expected thank you note, emails about gifts use, photos of child/adult with gift. No thank you. We were never close and she was actually quite cruel to me growing up. She likes to brag about generous she is. We used to just say "thank you" and move on, but she badgered you for more. We tried the polite "the gift is your presence, no need for material things." Nope. I had to spell it out. We do not want gifts. She kept sending them even more often...you can't even donate clothing with holes. Finally she stopped. That was a true gift. No more reminders of how my seemingly bright and accomplished sister wants to keep sending me junk while expecting endless praise and gratitude. |
Correction-some of the worn out clothing was ebay, others were from thrift shops or old things she had the somehow thought I wanted.
We do fine financially and are not so desperate for clothing that we want things with holes and stains. |
My MIL gives me high-value Starbucks cards for Christmas/birthday. I haven’t paid for my own coffee in years! |
Blue willow plates I inherited from my grandmother. I love the way they look on my wall. |
For my birthday last spring my husband surprised me with a picnic at a park. I had been working from home around the clock and was a total wreck of exhaustion and guilt about neglecting my kids while also feeling like I wasn't doing enough to satisfy my employer. My husband forced me to walk away from my computer and leave my phone in the car and we just all sat and ate and ran around for a few hours. It feels so incredibly corny now to say it but it was truly exactly what I needed and I was so grateful he made it happen. |
My in laws sent a wood salt bowl from their home country. I never had a salt bowl before and now I use it all the time. Random but special, sentimental, AND practical! |
