If you've lived outside of DC

Berkeley was my favorite. Perfect weather and I loved my house there. Unfortunately, I’ll probably never move back to California. My kids were born here in DC so this will always be home to them.

This is the only one I quibble with. What did you like about Brussels? I find it boring and soulless. Lived there for a year and it is one of the few places I have no desire to return to.

Multicultural and multilingual with great local and international schools

Thriving diverse business center: both of us have been able to climb the ladder in our respective fields

Supremely easy travel: in 1-2 hours, we can drive to Germany, Luxembourg, and The Netherlands. France is a half hour away.
Minutes from a huge international airport with direct flights to Dulles. Fast train takes us to Paris and London in under 3 hours.

Great beer and food and tons of Michelin restaurants plus fun festivals and beautiful Christmas markets. Great shopping, good arts and music scene, nice and interesting museums.

Tons of outdoor activities in and around the city and many are family friendly — we hike, bike, volksmarch as a family more here than anywhere else we’ve lived.

+100. Belgium is the New Jersey of Europe

Yes, the food and beer there is great, but great food can be had in most places, and beer can be exported

The weather in Brussels stinks., It is sunny and warm MAYBE 2 months out of the year, otherwise it's raining and cold.

Philadelphia was my least favorite city. I traveled through the ghetto everyday and learned to hate the segregation of the city.

I agree. My DH and I love Brussels and would gladly live there over DC.

Austin. Always sunny, people nice. City but not too city.

San Francisco in the early 90s was pretty amazing. You’d need a time machine to replicate the experience though. I’ve lived in the Boston area twice and I wouldn’t mind going back there. I’ve lived in the NY suburbs and while I liked some aspects, I won’t move back if I have a choice. Too crowded, too many a-holes.

I’m hoping we’ll retire on Cape Cod. Dh has inherited a buildable lot. My dream is we build a house and live there once the kids head off to college. 10 years to go!

Good one. I’ve had friends who lived there and I always enjoyed visiting. It seems very livable.

I’m going to politely ask you to grumble somewhere else on DCUM. This thread and post is about locations you’ve lived in that you have loved. I’ve lived in Why don’t post your own with some positive traits about a city or country you are really passionate about? If you haven’t experienced that or don’t want to, then just go ahead and see yourself out of this thread. I’ll toss you some delicious Belgian chocolate as the door closes behind you. Thank you!

OP, are you thinking of moving? It depends on your point of reference. People who were born and raised in the DC area tend to stay, because......Smithsonians?

Grew up in Southern California. Great place to grow up, but would not want to live there now. Where I lived you couldn't really walk anywhere, and there seems to be more focus on keeping up with the Joneses.

I'll just admit to loving DC, whatever that means about me. I love the change of seasons. I love being a parent here and everything there is to do for kids. I love Rock Creek Park. I love all the little shops near me. I love the access that the airports provide. I even like most of the people that I meet.

Grew up in the midwest.
Pittsburgh.
Virginia.

Virginia is my favorite but I really loved my time in Pittsburgh. Lots to do there. Fun, fun city. But, man, the weather is truly awful.
