We’re currently in the 4 month regression. For those that didn’t sleep train or sleep trained later, what were your experiences? Did it actually get better on its own in months 5 or 6? Did you actively do anything that helped?
We’re not sleep training at 4 months (though I understand and respect those that do), so I’m interested in others’ experiences and knowing what to expect. Thank you in advance! |
Just wait it out. We just went through it and baby regulated after a few weeks. We haven’t sleep trained but are working on baby sleeping independently. |

The search function on DCUM is horrible and turns up so many useless results. I find it hard to find anything since you get hits for every word. Help a poster out, even if it’s been asked before.
My first son was a horrible sleeper from early on, so we didn’t experience a 4 month regression. However, things did get better after 4 months. We did work to reduce feedings, but weren’t even that consistent with it. I have another one going through it now, so we’ll see what happens this time. |
Both my boys were good sleepers from the get go.
I made the decision at some point that because they were such good sleepers, if they had a regression, it meant they actually needed something, even if it was just a hug and some comfort. Without fail, every regression was temporary (a week or two at the most) and they all ended without interventions on my part. My responding to them did not create permanent, negative sleep associations or anything like that. |
Oh, the 4 month sleep regression is so brutal, because it feels like you just got sleep figured out in month 3.
For my baby, it only lasted two weeks. We still had DC sleeping in our room, so we were very responsive and not attempting to sleep train. The regressions are temporary, and won’t impact your baby’s ability to self soothe and go back to sleep. They go away on their own. Take care of yourself, and maybe trade shifts with your partner to get more sleep |
