Red specks of blood (TMI) -- 10 weeks preg

Anonymous
So last weekend I had a scare -- I experienced a rush of red blood (no cramping). I had an ultrasound 2 days later and cervix was closed, baby looked good and active with strong heartbeat according to my OB. Still she called it a "Threatened miscarriage" but was not concerned and said that this can be very normal. She did not identify a particular source of the bleeding. A couple of days later, I again had brown blood when I wiped and then a couple of days after that -- red blood again when I wiped myself. Barely. Again, the blood turned brown almost immediately again (I called my OB again at Foxhall and spoke with the nurse who was not concerned but advised me to call again if I experience cramping or increased bleeding).

Now, a week after the initial scare ... I just wiped myself and red blood again and found a collection of tiny red specks of blood (or tissue) in the toilet. No maxi pads needed.
Has anyone experienced these red specks? Not sure if I'm describing it well. Had very slight cramping earlier.

I have 2 friends who bled through much of their pregnancy but, geez, still freaky! I plan to call OB in the a.m. as I don't feel it's urgent right now ... but would appreciate any reassurance or similar experiences.

I had some bleeding with DD around this time frame (and earlier). Mine differed in that I never had the rush of blood you experienced last weekend. Anyway, mine turned out to be a subchorionic hemmorhage that resolved itself at some point. Still made for a scary pregnancy, tho. The bleeding pretty much stopped around 12 weeks but cropped up again at 30 and 35 weeks (i probably overexerted myself).

If you have another ultrasound, ask about the possibility of a subchorionic hemmorhage.

I didn't have any of the other bleeding that you had, OP, but I did have those tiny specks of blood (or tissue) when I wiped. This was at 8 weeks, and I am now 12 weeks. I also freaked out and went to the dr and got another U/S. I hope everything turns out okay.

Thanks for the similar stories. I will ask specifically about the possibility of a subchorionic hemmorhage, though, when she looked at the u/s a few days following the "Rush", everything looked intact and good. This morning, I'm feeling fine. The rush of blood has not happened again since a bit over a week ago and I don't even spot onto a maxi pad. The specks in the toilet were really what disconcerted me but I'm glad to hear that other people have experienced that (and spoke with a friend and relative who had that as well). I also just spoke with the RN at the practice who again was not concerned but said I could come if I want in late afternoon to do an u/s if I'm anxious. She said (as did my doc last week) that it's somewhat common and some women carry this way. Anyway, I live about 1/2 hour away and don't want to get stuck in the storm to or from ... I'm not cramping and bleeding so I may or may not go. I wish this stormy weather would just end. Thnx again.

Are you exerting yourself a lot? Heavy exercise/weightlifting, shoveling snow or even a lot of sex can cause some bleeding. Might want to take it easy and see if things subside.

OP here -- No sex (not very driven at this point anyway), no exercise/heavy lifting, and certainly no shoveling. I'm definitely taking it easy. I spoke with my doc again yesterday and plan to head in some time next week. He was not alarmed but it is still the first trimester. Should bleeding return and increase, that's another story. So far so good.... I'm SO ready to move onto the 2nd trimester.

My pregnancy with DD (who just turned 2) I spotted around 5 or so weeks. Implantation bleeding - brown blood. No other bleeding during that pregnancy. My current pregnancy (I'm currently 26.5 weeks pregnant) I "spotted" around 6 or 7 weeks and I honestly thought I had miscarried. There was enough red blood that I thought my period had started. I went home and laid down for the rest of the evening (it was a Sunday) and went to the OB the next day. Did a emergency ultrasound and everything was okay, phew! Then at 16 weeks (2.5 weeks after receiving a cerclage) I started to spot again - red blood. Due to my cerclage it wasn't due to sex (not allowed when you have a cerclage) and they didn't know why I was spotting. Continued to spot off and on for about a week - and even the OB specialist at GW couldn't give me a definitive reason as to why. I suppose the good thing was that they weren't concerned (I was freaking out though). Fortunately I haven't had anymore spotting since week 17 (knock on wood) and all is going well with my pregnancy.

I'll hope good things for you, but it can be competely "normal" to spot during pregnancy. I would just check in with your OB tomorrow and ask to have a sono to make sure that everything is going well.

Best wishes!
