This will be the third sleepless night for 14 month DD and me b/c she has a persistent cough and very runny nose. I could really use some help (and a good night of sleep) and am wondering if anyone has tried putting vicks vapor rub on DC's feet before going to bed. Did it help? OR is it an old wives tale?
Thanks! |
Worked for us! |
the smell helps no matter where u rub it. but rubbing on the chest and back is soothing and helps to release mucus. |
I read it was an old wives tale, but we gave it a try anyway. It really worked for us, so I was glad we tried it.
We also tried giving him honey, but it was awful - it made him cough so hard he vomited. I'll never do that again. |
you have to squeeze some lime in it. one lime for 150ml of honey. |
I know you did not suggest it, but a warning to anyone using vicks, Keep OFF a child's face, it is very dangerous. I do use it on my childrens' feet (and have even tried it on my own) and it really seems to work. |
Why is it dangerous? My mom said she used to put in on our noses all the time when we had a cold. |
I do this too. You can also use Eucalyptus oil. And then I put warm sock straight out of the dryer. |
How does this work? A dab on the tops of the feet? |
I massage it into the soles of the feet, with my thumbs. Stimulates all the acu points there. |
Never under the nose (and I wouldn't do near face or neck either on a very young child). A recent study says it can actually cause respiratory distress in young kids.

There is a children's vicks... that should be OK. |
We rubbed some on the onesie collar - it stained a little, but it was a small price to pay for some consecutive hours of sleep. |
yep, this worked for us! i couldn't believe it. rub a good amount onto the soles of baby's feet and cover with socks. agree with the PPs, never use a rub that has menthol or mentholatum in it, it can cause respiratory distress. most of the stuff that is out these days for babies doesn't have it, but read the label. |
OP here- thanks everyone! DD slept (and so did I) MUCH better last night. Seems to have worked! |
