When does newborn gas subside?

Anonymous
I know newborns are notorious for having difficulty passing gas, but does any one remember when things get a little easier in this area? For the last 3 nights my almost 4 week old has been waking every 60-90 minutes, grunting continuously and furiously fighting the swaddle (he is in the Miracle Blanket). He will nurse for comfort but doesn't appear particularly hungry. I thought maybe he didn't like the swaddle (although he likes it when he falls asleep) but he woke up every 10 minutes when I took him out of it. He stiffens his legs and passes some gas as he nurses and that seems to make him feel better, but then I put him back down after nursing and he wakes 60-90 minutes later doing the same thing. Will the gas issues get easier for him soon so we can both get some sleep? I should note that this only seems to be an issue overnight.

Try swaddling only his lower body; burp well.

My 4 month old still has occasional issues but got MUCH better around 10-11 weeks I think. Only at night too. I found that really getting good burps throughout the day, baths at night, the colic hold (upside down on your forearm with the head towards your elbow), bicylcing the legs and tummy rubbing (clockwise in circles) helped a lot. I think you'll find it will get better every week although you'll have a few setbacks along the way.

I don't remember when it got better - my baby is one year and still has lactose intolerance so it all jumbles together in my head. But I will say we used the gas-x drops and the baby's bliss gripe water and that seemed to help a lot. Good luck, I know how tough it can be!

My newborn was similar. It just got better the last week or so -- she's 11 weeks. One thing that helped was burping her for longer to get all the gas out. I also think she has a slight intolerance to dairy in my diet, so I've eliminated it and that seems to help. Finally, I think I had an oversupply for a couple of weeks when she was about a month old, and this upset her tummy during night feeds when my boobs were more full I think. The supply evened out after a couple of weeks, and she began to sleep easier.

Mine still does this at 4.5 m. Some nights he sleeps great, others he is up every 90 minutes and fussy until he passes gas. I hope he grows out of it soon!
