Daughter bitten by another child at school - call the dr.??

Anonymous
I just got a call that my dd was bitten at school by another child. It did break the skin a little bit. The teacher said that their policy is to call and recommend that the parents call our pediatrician to see if he wants to see it. Isn't that overreacting? Obviously, we'll look out for signs of infection, but I can't be bringing my dd to the dr. every time she gets bitten or scratched, etc. What does everyone here think?

If by breaking the skin, you mean your child bled, I would at least call the ped and ask their advice. Mostly because if the wound wasn't properly cleaned and covered, it may result in an infecton. Not to mention that in a daycare setting, a child is exposed to many germs. They may suggest just monitoring the bite and applying some neosporin. Yes, it's a hassle, but better safe than sorry!

I agree with you. We've never brought our kid to the doctor for that. They're probably just protecting themselves.

If DC is up to date on shots, should not need a ped. visit. We had the same thing happen several years ago, called the doctors' office. As for adults, it's a good idea to stay current on your tetnus shots.

call me old fashioned, but i'd just use neosporin and leave it be unless i saw some signs of infection.

Call the doctor. If this gets infected, you need documentation...
