Hi,
I'm tired of eating at home and have two children under three. I like the following obvious restaurants and think they're reasonably family friendly: Pizza Paradiso Chef Geoff's (the one on New Mexico Ave.) Peacock Cafe Cactus Cantina Taqueria Poblano in Arlington, VA Would anyone share some other suggestions? I'm not really interested in chain restaurants, or restaurants in malls - or places just for kids. I'm just looking for places with godo adult food, a good glass of wine, and lots of tolerance for little kids. Thanks! ![]() |
I'm assuming you're open to Virginia suggestions since you mentioned one. We love Pie-tanza in the Lee-Harrison Shopping Center in Arlington. The food is fantastic, nice atmosphere (looks like an adult restaurant), and it's a romper room before 7 (okay, not that bad, but very kid friendly and a great kids' menu). |
old ebbit ( could be spelled wrong) very kid friendly. Good food. Indigo blue in alexandria, great food, great place in warm weather for kids. They have a huge outdoor eating area, can watch airplanes come in, but I do not think they are all that kid friendly if eating inside. Austin Grill in Old Town, very very kid friendly, good mexican food, decent wine, not top of the line, but not barefoot brand either. |
Filomena in Georgetown
Chima in Tyson's Corner Levantes BlackSalt (never been but heard they're friendly) Normandie Farms (never been....heard the food is just okay but they advertise as being good for kids) Bethesda does have many good places and there are a lot of kids at many of them if you go on the earlier side. Personally, I think going to any restaurant early on a weeknight should be allowed with the exception of Citronelle-level places that are obviously too fancy. As long as you are being considerate of others, you should feel like you can try new places. We call and ask if kids are allowed and they may say something like "Well, you can bring a child any time, but we would prefer it be a Sunday". If you go to www.dcfoodies.com there are reviews with diaper ratings that tell you how baby friendly they are. |
We love going out to eat as well. We haven't had a problem at all yet (we have one 5 yr old). Our faves:
Lebanese Taverna (Woodley Park) Oyamel (Penn Quarter) after a day at the museums Jaleo (Penn Quarter) yes, we spend a lot of time down there! ![]() Matchstick (Chinatown) Chef Geoff's downtown (though I'm not a big fan), but nice before/after National Theater Open City Diner (Woodley Park) I know you want "adult", but Open city is just fabulous. They have a decent wine list, great patio sections and the food is much better than typical diner food Tabard Inn (Dupont) BLT Steak (though it's a little loud for our dd) We try to hit a new place each weekend. It's a lot of fun and our dd is quite the foodie already! ![]() |
We got to Whitlow's on Wilson in Clarendon all the time - but get there early on Saturdays - between 6 & 6:30pm. There are tons of families in there. I second Pie-tanza in the Harrison Street Shopping Center -- food is great, but get there early. Also Listrani's on MacArthur Boulevard was pretty family friendly. |
Comet Ping Pong next to Politics and Prose. The pizza is as good as Paradisio or 2Amys (it better be since that's the only thing on the menu besides salad and dessert) and the funky decor goes well with messy kids. Added bonus is they have parking in the back. |
My daughter loves Blacksalt. I recommend going on the early side.
2 Amys Bambu on MacArthur Generous Georges in Alexandria Pizza is OK but there is enough to keep a large crowd of kids entertained |
Cafe Deluxe on Wisconsin is terrific. |
Has anyone taken a young child to Buck's? My recollection from eating there pre-baby was that it was reasonably kid-friendly, but I wasn't really paying attention. |
Two Amy's
Clydes Indique if you go early or eat outside |
Ella's - in Penn Quarter near the spy museum and the portrait gallery -- they have crayons! |
We are always at Pie-Tanza since we live around the corner. Rio Grande is yummy..it is so loud no one cares. We also frequent Austin Grill. My 2.5 yr old twins love Mexican so it makes them happy and me-love margaritas!

Yes, we just took our 17 m/o to Buck's last weekend. They had to get a highchair from Comet's next door and didn't have a Kid's menu (but the mac 'n cheese listed as a side was perfect), so we were a bit nervous. It ended up going really well. When DS got fussy, we just took turns walking him around and the bartender, wait staff and other diners were all super friendly. |
Rio Grande, Jaleo, any place in Bethesda pretty much so long as it is not late (say after 7 or 8) |
