I am 5 weeks pregnant and have been taking folic acid. My OB appointment is in a few weeks but should I be taking any prenatal vitamins before then? I had been taking the Wholefoods one but it made me feel really sick and given I wasn't then pregnant I figured it was all a bit pointless and I had enough time to feel sick! Does anyone have any recs for any others? |
I think you should definitely be taking more than just a folic acid supplement--for yourself, if not just for the baby (who will take all the vitamins/nutrients it needs from you, leaving you at a deficit). I took the GNC prenatals, with no iron added in the first trimester, and then the ones with iron added in the second and third trimesters. I took the bottle in for my doc to take a look at, and she said they had everything in there that I needed, and were very similar to the pricier prescription prenatals she usually recommends. If you're having problems with morning sickness, I know a lot of women take their prenatals with dinner and/or right before bed, which seems to help them stay down. |
Different brands will have a different effect on you, so try a few other ones. Some people on this board said in the past they were less sick on Target brand ones. Your doc might prescribe some (like Citracal with DHA) - you could ask them to call it in before your appointment too. |
prescription can be nice--covered by insurance.
I always took mine at bedtime--didn't want to be burping iron all day. you may have to try a few different brands before you find one that works for you, but then again, everything may make you feel sick for a while. |
I threw up every brand I tried and then finally got gummy vitamins. They were the only ones that stayed down. Also, my doc said that if you can't tolerate any vitamins, just folic acid is ok. |
call your doc-let her/him know that you are pregnant and ask them to call in a prenatal--now is the and I do mean the most important time to get those vitamins in. This should not be a problem by the way. |
Why no iron 1st tri? With my first child, I was found to be slightly anemic and was required to take iron supplements. I have since learned that there is a direct correlation between a child's iron levels and stores for his entire life and mom's iron levels when pregnant. Basically my baby did not get enough iron and now at 2 years old is anemic. I wish I had known that then, I would have been much more focused on getting proper iron. I also realized that the prenatal is NO GOOD for iron and calcium because they both negate each other. Iron blocks calcium absorbtion and vice versa. Therefore I'm doing my own vitamin regime and taking certain vitamins wiht certain foods and different times of the day to ensure absorbtion. For example calcium in the morning and iron and the rest of the pills at night because your body processes vitamins best when sleeping and the vitamin C in the orange aids in the absorbtion process. |
I too take them at night. You should be on something more than just folic acid. Call MD - most will recommend a written prescription pre-natal. |
I take the Target brand prenatal vitamins. They have all the same stuff as the higher priced ones and I haven't caused me any problems. Prescription prenatal vitamins, according to my doctor, are not necessary under normal circumstances. Also, depending on your insurance, they may come out substantially more expensive than OTC vitamins. |
The prenatals I took were coated so it didn't make me feel bad (although they tasted awful, but I could live with that). If I remember correctly it also had a stool softener in it which was super helpful.
Congrats! |
