We need to buy a new, cabinet depth fridge this week. Please let me know any sales you recommend, features to look for, etc. also, is French door better than side by side, and if so, why? |
I don't recommend samsung |
I have a relative who has been moving over to LG for every appliance because she is so happy with them. I have to admit that the fridge she has is pretty nice - it is one of the ones with the quick-access door built into the right-side door. You can put your most important beverages in that bin and get them without opening the fridge.
I still have a side-by-side myself, but everyone I know who has a bottom freezer seems to love the larger fridge unit on top. I imagine the doors would take some getting used to. By the way, the prettiest fridge I've seen is the Cafe. You can pick from four different metals for the handles. |
Avoid Samsung. Their stuff is made like crap. I’ve spent many hundreds buying new shelves and drawers because the plastic cracks at the slightest thing. GE profile seems to generally get good reviews on appliances.
In general, I’d also avoid all the fancy new touch panels and so forth—-the more tech is on it, the more likely you will have things that break and can’t be easily fixed. |
Our Samsung is crap, too. |
Happy with our whirlpool gold french door, freezer on the bottom. But the ice maker stopped working three years in - we were able to have it fixed under extended warranty. I've heard all ice makers suck nowadays - including Samsung, whirlpool, Kitchenaid. |
I agree with the comments about Samsung. Really happy with our Whirlpool, but I don’t think this is cabinet depth:

Those giant freezer drawers are difficult to keep organized. I’ve seen some with two drawers on the bottom, which might help to see what you have in there.

Oh man, we just bought a Samsung French door and love it. Friends of ours had big issues with their LG.
What are the issues we can expect to have with our Samsung? |
I bought organizers from Container Store for this. You can probably find them at any Homegoods or TJ Maxx as well. We don't tend to keep much in our freezer, so we don't have any issues with seeing what's in there but the organizers help us keep everything separate (e.g. one for ice packs, one for frozen fruit & veggies etc). |
We LOVE our LG with the door-in-door (french doors with bottom freezer) that someone else mentioned. Ours is full size and not cabinet-depth, though, and we're glad we went with the larger size. The bottom freezer has 3 compartments inside - a top bucket drawer, a middle shallow drawer, and a deep double-sided bottom drawer. It's really nice to just open that small front door to get out milk or drink cans. |
GE profile fridge has been fine |
We’ve had our Samsung for three years and we love it too. No issues. |
It will just die after about 8-9 years. There will be nothing you can do, so don’t waste your money on trying to repair it. |
Whirlpool/Kitchenaid have been appliances all around for us |
