I am having trouble burping my 1 month old daughter. I don't think she has reflux problems.. maybe I am too impatience.. She nurses well for 10-20 minutes, depending on the time of day, but does not burp well.. exceptwhen she gets her one bottle a day from DH at 10pm..I put her over my shoulder and alternate between rubbing her back and tapping it- I do pat hard, and usually I try for 5-7 minutes, but sometimes she'll burp 45 minutes later..and will be uncomfortable until shedoes...and she often spits up..not a ton, but a little here and there for up to 1/2 hr after a feeding. She is putting on weight really well, so I know she's eating ok, but when she doesn't burp, she does not sleep well and it through the whole routine off.. often, she'll spit up inthe crib and then just lie there for a while until I go in and wipe her and move her to a different part of the crib....HELP! |
Our daughter was not easy to burp either, but here are a few things to try. Lay her, tummy down, across your legs and pat her back (sometimes the extra pressure on the tummy does the trick). Another thing to try, which worked really well for us, is to gently bounce her up and down after feeding (either on your lap, or held up in your hands). Sounds crazy, but read it in Happiest Baby on the Block and it works - something about "shaking" the bubbles loose so that they can rise to the top, so to speak. Make sure to try burping, any which way, half way through the meal, then again at the end - better to let it out as it builds up rather than for the gas to accumulate. Good luck! |
OP- Thank you... I hesitate in burping half way through because whenever I do, she will not latch on again.. so, do I risk a short feed and having her wake up hungry too soon, or let her have a good feed and then try and burp her? |
I'm the PP - then perhaps just try a few different burping techniques at the end of the feeding and see how it goes. On the other hand, maybe she would eventually learn to re-latch, especailly if she does burp? Perhaps she is now just too uncomfortable, once she unlatches, to start again? |
Our DD didn't burp that much no matter who patted her back and when. She was fine and happy so we didn't fret too mcuh. |
