applying heat to aches and pains

Anonymous
i use a heating pad to deal with some pain that i get in my neck and shoulders and MIL was saying that you should never apply heat to a muscle ache. anyone know if she is right and why?

I always use a heating pad on cramps, so I think your MIL is wrong. I've never heard of that.

They make icy hot patches specifically for aches and pains...so I can't imagine it would be bad for muscles.

Ice is for swelling. Heat is ok for aches and pains that aren't swollen. I am under my heat lamp right now, rehabing my sore hip. It feels much better after being heated. Tomorrow, jacuzi for the rest of my aches and pains.

Agree with above advice. Heat is great for sore muscles. If you have ever been to a chiropractor or massage therapist, they will heat your muscles before or while working on them, because they loosen up that way.

And moist heat like in the shower is good too - it really does help loosen the muscles.
