Experiences with Wii Fit?

Anonymous
My husband, who hasn't exercised in years and loves playing videogames in his "free" time, wants a Wii Fit. He's convinced that merging videogame-i-ness with exercise will finally get him off the couch. I am skeptical to say the least--he has a seldom-used gym membership and I see the Wii fit as another thing to clutter our house. I can totally imagine him using it for several weeks and then never again afterwards.

Does anyone have a Wii Fit that they get a lot of use and benefit from? We live in an urban area, close to bike trails and sidewalks, and our gym is open until 10pm--I have a hard time understanding the benefit of the Wii Fit but would be interested to hear others' experiences.

I used to use it all the time when I had time for video games.

My SIL bought one for herself for Christmas to get in shape this year. But my BIL and nephew were hogging it all weekend. It was HILARIOUS to watch them hula hoop and run/jump across logs on a river. It looks like a lot of fun. It certainly motivated my rather sedentary in laws into moving, laughing and having fun together. But whether they are motivated 8 weeks from now remains to be seen.

My boss lost 25 pounds on it and he hates the gym. I think it's great motivation for video game lovers.

Depends on the individual.

Mine has never been out of it's box.....and I've had it 1? 2? years. Will set it up on a different tv sometime soon, there's just not enough room in the room I originally had the system setup in for the wii fit. Maybe then it'll see more use, as intended.

A friend of mine on the other hand, is very overweight and was previously pretty sedentary but has used it to lose quite a bit of weight and is good about using it.

In short- everyone will be different.

I am of average weights, and fitness level. My Wii fit is lots of FUN, but certainly not for getting fit! MAYBE the elderly would benefit.
He would be much better off, power walking, doing sit-ups and push - ups, getting some weights, riding a bike.

I agree with PP that it wasn't really a workout. It was kind of fun, though. I also used to use it to track my weight.
