so my OB, suggested not coloring my hair, but my stylest said that a hair toner would be fine b.c. it does not have any amonia or or perioxide in it. I am entering my 3rd trimester. any experience with this? |
Not sure if this helps, but two OBs have told me it's fine to continue coloring my hair (in 1st and in 2nd trimester) but I know it's in some ways a matter of personal opinion--the first OB told me that she personally continued to color her hair throughout her pregnancy. I have also read that supposedly highlights are better than all over color as it doesn't touch your scalp.
That said, I felt so guilty I waited until I could no longer stand it and my roots were horrifying before going. |
There are differing opinions on coloring your hair while pregnant. Some say definitely not, others say it's ok. I colored my hair once in the first trimester and once in the second trimester because I am only 34 and the gray hairs coming in were really bothering me. They're coming in again, but since I'm almost done with pregnancy I'm going to wait until after the baby is born. I also heard that highlights are better to get during pregnancy and that sometimes the color doesn't hold as well anyway because of the hair texture during pregnancy. My ob said it was ok to color your hair anytime during pregnancy as long as you were in a well ventilated area. |
Truth is, none of us should be coloring our hair. It is bad for all of us - pregnant, or not.

PP 19:58. I don't think the query was asking for individual opinions but rather the correlation between risks during pregnancy. Perhaps we should keep our environmental opinions to ourselves. |
To the OP-this is a great question. I dyed my hair a few weeks ago, and found out I was pregnant a week later and now I'm really worried. |
I am in my third trimester, actually less than three weeks from birth and I used Henna (all natural) to color my hair and it worked great! I had three OBs in three countries and the only one (in Mexico City) said it was not a problem and most women I encountered there who were pregnant said they used regular hair dye throughout their pregnancy without any problems or issues to their child. I say go Henna to be on the safe side. |
The fact is that if you have your blood drawn after an all over color application the chemicals from the hair color product are found in your blood. Based on that fact you should make your own decision. I know there are a couple chemicals in most hair dyes that are particularly strong. I switched to a vegetable based product from whole foods and have been applying it myself every 5 weeks or so. I have brown hair and am just trying to cover the gray hair but the color is actually really nice. I don't think I'm going to switch back to the $$$ salon hair color after the baby is born... |
To the PP, what Whole Foods product are you referring to? |
If you're looking for people to say that they dyed their hair against medical advice and still had normal-seeming kids, I'm sure you'll find some anecdotes here.
But I'd take my OB's advice over my stylist's. Especially if you are in your third trimester -- you're almost there. |
Actually, the OP asked if anyone has experience with this (the decision to color during pregnancy). I'm not sure how that excludes individual opinions. And "the correlation between risks during pregnancy" doesn't even make sense. The PP was no more expressing an "environmental" opinion than anyone else. |
Shut up 11:33 |
OP - I have colored my hair three times this pregnancy and I'm at 25 weeks. The first time was when I was 5 weeks or so and didn't know I was pregnant yet. The second was at 13 weeks once I was out of the first trimester. The last time was just last week.
My OB has said it's not a problem. I told my stylist at my 13 week appt. and she used a different kind of dye and so far so good. |
Hi there, OP, my Ob said it was fine to color throughout - I'm a pediatrician (and never heard through any part of my training that hair color in a pregnant woman has any effect on a fetus at any gestationsla age) and demanded that he tell me the research that supports the safety and he said there is minimal absorption through the skin and the color only stays on the scalp for 30 min, so any frequency of coloring was ok, he said the biggest deal would be if i could tolerate the smell; i went every 2 months throughout the pregnancy and did real hair color - ammonia, peroxide, and all!
i found out i was pregnant last week and got my hair colored. ![]() hope this helps! |
My OB practice tells pregnant women to wait until the 2nd trimester, but otherwise it's fine. Though I normally do a base root color and highlights, I've only done highlights while pregnant just as a matter of personal feelings on it. I also had highlights starting in the 2nd trimester with my first pregnancy. |
