First and foremost, I am not a car person, and I do not care at all about what my car looks like. I want it to be comfortable in that it doesn't give me back pain, but that's really it - I don't care about leather seats, etc.
DH and I need to buy a car. We have a 7 month old (yet another reason the interior doesn't need to be too "nice" since it will inevitably feel the wrath of our son in the next few years). I want something that will last a long time - so a Honda? Or Toyota? My mom has an outback that she loves, but she lives in Upstate New York where four wheel drive seems more important than it would here, although I do like the hatchback. We can put 10K down and would love to keep the monthly payments below $300, so I think that would give us a budget of about $25k. I would love some suggestions! |
RAV 4 - get a base model out the door for 23k or so. Toyota has a good suite of standard safety features now. I am not a car person either (and never really thought I wanted an SUV) but after the RAV I’ll never go back. It’s so comfortable. |
You can't go wrong with Honda/Toyo/Subaru. If you plan to have a second child one of these days, I'd suggest a minivan - Odyssey or Sienna. Even though Sienna didn't do well this year's crash test. |
Second this suggestion. I bought a Rav4 when I was pregnant with our now toddler after not having a car for almost 10 years. Great buy. You may need to pay a little more than $23k though. I personally liked the one up from the base model better and I'm not a car person either. |
get a Camry , huge trunk and you will be able to keep it forever. Plenty of room to expand to a family of 4 , great mileage etc. |

+1 Toyota is the most reliable car manufacturer out there. |
Thirded, but I think you can get it in your budget, especially if you're okay with the base model (LE). We got an XLE Hybrid out the door for $26k, just depends on when you shop (we went in December for the year-ending model year and got a deal). |
Whatever you decide to buy, words of wisdom:

For the RAV4, also be mindful of the fact that if you plan to have a second child, you cannot put two car seats and an adult in pre-2019 RAV4s (not that you would want to anyway since it's tight, but Toyota specifically didn't allow this because the seat belts overlap, so only two of the three seating positions can be used at a time). This was finally fixed for the 2019 model year, so if you're buying new, you're good. |
If you want good back support, I suggest that you go sit in a bunch of cars to see what feels the best to you (perhaps at a car show). That’s what I did, and I did find brands that seemed to do much better than others.
I also felt that leather was more supportive - you might want to look into that. |
You can get a new Kia Niro for that price. It's an awesome car with amazing fuel efficiency. I routinely get 50+ mpg in warmish weather. It has far exceeded my expectations. My husband, who is a car person, now wants one too after driving mine on weekends. |
We have two Subarus, and are very happy. |
our suburu has a lot of minor issues. it has not been as trouble free as I thought it would be. my used camry with leather seqts has been awesome and lowest maintenance car I have ever owned. leather seats hold up preety well with all the chereos and dirt from the kids and dog. |
Oddessey- leather seats (much easier to clean up, spilled milk won't set in the fabric and stink). Will fit plenty of people and stuff, reliable. |
Bwhahaha. Not for $25k. |
