My roommate from Ohio (but I think Appalachian, really) always said cupboard for closet. |
All of mine are Southern, I think. Definitely heard them in North Carolina.
Tote = carry, "Is that too big for you to tote?" Carry = take somewhere, "Can you carry me to the store?" Also, "Bless (his/her/their) heart!" I know it usually follows some kind of insult, but I think it's hilarious! |
I went to school in TN and I love all these! I also like "Oh hush!" Leave it to pleasant southerners to have such a polite way of saying shut the f up. But as much as I've heard GO VOLS (and every rendition of Rocky Top) I have no idea what east, west or middle means. Is that asking what part of TN you're from? |
Other SC poster here.. and yes, we definitely say "an' them" too! |
I remember being in 8th grade and carting around with my parents to visit all these fancy New England boarding schools...at one school the very elegant and refined headmistress was speaking about the new perfomring arts center that was being built...and she slipped up and accidentally referred to it is a
"thee-ater"! She turned bright red. I thought it was funny. |
People in Minesota (and maybe elswhere) call the carts at the grocery store "buggies." They also pronounce bag as "bayg" like bay with a g on the end of it. |
I wasn't trying to be argumentative by saying I grew up in NE and didn't use bubbler or frappe - I was just confused b/c I never used or heard those terms before. But NE is pretty big so there are probably just differences depending on where in NE you grew up. For instance, I never use the word 'wicked' but lots of my RI friends use it - and people in certain parts of Massachusetts. |
OMG, I totally forgot about that one! How could no one have posted wicked yet? |
My husband (from Silver Spring MD) says "where's that at?" and "cut off" for "turn off". Both phrases make me a little nuts. |
My SD says she's fixin to leave the house, or fixing to eat dinner, fixin to do a lot of things. She only says this for a week or two after she returns from Texas. |
I am from the south and I didn't even realize that people up here DON'T say "tote around" or some of the other things that I read about today. I just thought everyone talked like that. I feel pretty dumb now. |
we never said "down the shore" but i'm from the tippy top of NJ, though we NEVER called it the beach...it was still the shore.
we also never say y'all...which is pretty standard everywhere else. |
I had a Minnesotan friend who peppered her conversations with "Uff da!" and "ish", "ishy", and if it was really gross, "ish ka bibble!" That may be specifically norwegian, though, and not common to all Minnesotans. |
I am the TN poster. Yes, when they ask east, west or middle it is the part of TN. If you answer west it most likely refers to Memphis. If you answer Middle, it refers to Nashville. East refers to Knoxville. All the other surrounding towns are really small.
Bless your heart is the best. I still say it . I usually mean it in a negative but polite way! Hush-I wish I could count how many times I have heard that. My grandmother is 76 and still says it. Carry-that drives me nuts! I am not sure why but it does! ![]() |
Was your friend 2? ![]() |
