moving furniture yesterday (okay, bad idea at 30 weeks but we're getting the nursery together) I threw out my back and have been in bad pain since them. Am on the couch alternating heat and ice and took a tylenol, but wondered if there are any okay to take antiinflammatories or muscle relaxants?. I'll call my OB tomorrow but until then really am in pain. any suggestions helpful. |
I think the conventional wisdom is no, you shouldn't take anti-inflammatories or muscle relaxants.
You should get your OB on the phone, however (if you're in that much pain, you could just call their on-call doc), and ask about your options besides Tylenol. As a migraine sufferer, I sat down with my neurologist and we made a list of the medications I could try during pregnancy, in order of risk/reward. It started with Tylenol, and went on from there to include some "questionable" meds that I could choose to take if I felt like the pain merited it. Happily, I never had a migraine while pregnant, so it never came up, but the point is, your OB should be able to help you strategize about what other "less-safe" drugs you could try if you're desperate. |
My friends with serious back problems swear by their chiropractors. Why not go for an adjustment. |
lots of rest ...then a prenatal yoga video...heaven for your back. Or chiro like PP said. |
I also suggest acupressure/acupuncture. |
try the chiro--I did it for sciatica and insurance covered it (just had to pay my $10 copay each visit) |
I also reccommend the chiropractor. Dr. Mary Jo Palmer works wonders. |
thanks everyone, I decided to rest, alternate ice and heat and take a few baths---it's definitely much much better. I have also started a hypnobabies home study course and I used some of the relaxation/pain control methods and that actually helped. But I'm keeping the names of those chiropracters, as I've been getting frequent sciatica so will go in for some adjustment when next necessary. |
