I'm thinking about joining a gym but am wary of the hard sell you get from the employees when inquiring about membership fees and monthly rates. Can you tell me what gym you belong to and what you pay for your monthly gym membership? Does it include childcare? Was there an initial joining fee? Just trying to see what the normal range is. Thanks in advance. |
When I was shopping around for gyms a few years ago, I found Fitness First to be the most reasonably priced. I think it was $35/month then. They did have child care but I didn't have children so I'm not sure whether they charge for child care. |
Just joined an Anytime Fitness--they waived the joining fee (new place) but charge a one-time $45 key/pass fee, then something like $45 a month. It's a small place without a lot of extras (such as pool, childcare, etc.) but very convenient for me. |
thanks so much, this seems more reasonable than I thought. any more datapoints? |
Washington Sports Clubs, $65 a month. Childcare ... I'm not sure if it's included, I think it is. No initiation fee. |
I pay 73.00 for WSC. How did you get that deal? thanks. . . |
I pay (about) $73, too, and I don't even have the passport membership! I think childcare is a minimal cost ($1-2/hour or something), although I have never used it so I'm not sure. |
New gym in Fairfax called World Gym, my DH pays $20 a month, I got a deal on 9/9/09 and pay $9.99. No childcare, and no classes, but has all the equipment, and is open 24 hrs on weekdays and closes at 8pm on Sat and Sun. |
Yuck - I pay 74 a month at WSC and fully know I'm getting duped - I'm only a gold member so in theory I can only go to one gym during peak hours, though I've been told they are really lax about that because the gym is usually not crowded enough for them to enforce that when I go (during lunch). I joined four years ago.
I think mine is expensive because my "home gym" is in downtown DC near my office. I should really call and try to negotiate, my problems is that gym is so convenient because it's near work for lunch workouts and it's near my house for weekends; and they teach yoga classes. Child care is included but I would not leave my toddler there. She does daycare 4 days a week and that' enough, plus I'm not sure how safe it is - not confident someone wouldn't wander off with her and it's not worth it. |
I belong to a place in Bethesda called Royal Fitness. It's about $49/month, no pool, older facility, no childcare (well, there technically is childcare, but for $8/hr/per child you get either one of the beefy, steroided, non-verbal trainer-types or a non-English speaking member of the cleaning crew). The place is terribly run and poorly managed, so I think I get what I pay for! |
Results off peak membership (btw 9-3, after 9 pm and anytime on w/e) is $74. Their childcare (only at Cap Hill) is basic but the ladies are really nice. It's $3.50/hour if you prepay 10 hours. I belonged to Fitness First for several years before I started SAH and it was fine for $38/month. But you get what you pay for: small, everything very close together, locker rooms were always dirty. I pay way too much for Results but the gyms are huge, immaculate and the childcare is good enough for $3.50. |
Lifetime Fitness
$60/month $6/month/child I love it (including the childcare)! |
110 mint on u st in dc. its near work and is a haven. |
WOW thats alot |
Fitness First offers the best deal, they are cheap, big and many of them have tons of classes to choose from.
WSC is very shady with the rates, but locker rooms are nice and new. The child care lady in Clarendon is very nice, but I had a not so nice experience with the one in SS. MINT is small, but has plush locker rooms. VIDA is up there with MINT, but seems much more high energy. MINT feels more relaxing. The Y is also affordable, has many different programs and is very family friendly. I don't know how much Gold's goes for, but they also have a big variety of classes and nice facilities. Bally's, has good classes but the one's I've been in look old and dirty. |
