Where do you live? Do you want to try and use your insurance or do you want to pay out of pocket?

What are the issues you are concerned about? And are you prepared to pay out of pocket or do you want to go somewhere that accepts insurance?

Several ideas on this thread. http://www.dcurbanmom.com/jforum/posts/list/682446.page

We use Mindwell Psychology in Chantilly VA and pay out of pocket. Insurance reimbursed about $600 of $3500.

Sorry- guess I left out a lot of details! I live in Montgomery County, so somewhere in the area would be ideal. As for insurance, of course it would be wonderful to find someone good that also takes insurance, but if that's not possible, we're prepared to pay out of pocket and hope to get reimbursed some.

My son is in 5th grade and has ADHD, anxiety and learning disabilities, especially in regards to processing. There are receptive and expressive language issues. Want to be sure that he is set up for success when entering middle school next year with his IEP ,etc.

Also, his school is doing speech, psychological and educational testing (last time they did it was in 2nd grade). If the school is doing this, is it still suggested that we have it done privately? Of course the school says its not necessary, but I'd imagine a private evaluation is way more comprehensive. Would appreciate any thoughts on that as well. Thank you!

You can still do testing privately even though the school is doing their own testing. However, your provider needs to be in contact with the school so that the same measures are not used twice because that would invalidate the results. I would hate for you to pay for private testing and then have the data not be useful.

We live in DC, not MCPS. But when the school did testing they didn't use all of the same sections and subtests that our private neuropsychologist did. The overlap would come in the psychological and educational portions.

Given the range of issues your child has and the increased demands that come with going to middle school, I would definitely do private testing if you can possibly afford it.

OP, your DS sounds just like my DS! We went to Dr. Jody Bleiberg in Bethesda. She has a solo, private practice. Really got my kid! understood his areas of weakness, and provided us with a 13 page report a few weeks after testing. We paid $4K back in 2015, which is pretty much the going rate for private evals in the DC area.
