Carefirst vs. Kaiser - Do we need to be Married or Domestic Partner OK?

Hi Everyone!

I'm trying to shop plans on the MD Health Exchange that cover Infertility (IVF and IUI).

I've been (not surprisingly) appalled at the lack of info the insurers will give as to how they cover infertility. They won't give you info unless you actually HAVE then plan. (Yes, I just filed a complaint with the Maryland Insurance Administration and notified my reps)

Among other questions I have, does anyone know if my partner and I (we're registered as Domestic Partners) and own a house together, etc. Do need to be married to have IVF covered by either Kaiser or Carefirst? Specifically, looking at either the KP MD Platinum 0/5/Dental plan or the HealthyBlue HMO Gold $1,000 for 2018.

I know in 2015, they broadened the insurance mandate to cover same-sex couples who were married, but not sure how domestic partners are covered.

On a related note: any advice anyone can give as to choosing between these plans, or others on the Exchange would be greatly appreciated. We have paid out of pocket thus far for Infertility testing because my partner's insurance does not cover any of it, hence - why I'm looking at Exchange plans.

Thank you!

I have carefirst thru the exchange and they required a copy of my marriage license. Good luck to you!

Most require a marriage license. When we did IVF through MDIPA about 5 years ago they did.
