help with grass and weed removal for large parts of my yard

Anonymous
I have a path at the side of my house that is overgrown with grass and weed. I don't have budget for it now but will eventually want to pave it with concrete or stones to make it grass free path. I am hoping for a DIY where I can quickly and cheaply kill off all the grass and it appears smothering the grass with plastic will work.

Can someone point me to buying the right type of plastic? It appears I need plastic that blocks UV and won't break down in the elements but would be permeable to allow water to go through. Any experts on this?

Look in garden stores for weed-blocking plastic. Or you can just lay down several thicknesses of newspaper or cardboard, weigh it down and wet it. Whatever grows underneath will eventually die off.

If you want to kill everything in that area, why not just buy some Glyphosate concentrate and spray it all down? It'll cost you like $20 for a quart bottle which will easily kill a whole yard's worth of grass and anything else that photosynthesizes.

You can buy the landscape fabric at home depot that will kill everything. Also purchase the sod pins so that you can keep the plastic secured over the grass.

Thick layers of wet newspaper/cardboard kill the grass/weeds and then decompose. Works well for garden areas.

Roundup is your best bet but then you have to wait to re-seed. Otherwise, any plastic will work fine. Left on top of your lawn on a sunny day, the plants will die within an hour from the heat but leave it there a good week to really get the job done.

Round Up doesn't linger in the soil. Once the plants are dead you're fine to reseed.
