Harvard Considers Banning Students from Social Groups

"A faculty committee has recommended that the College forbid students from joining all “fraternities, sororities, and similar organizations”—including co-ed groups—with the goal of phasing out the organizations entirely by May 2022.
...
The committee suggested that Harvard model its new social group policy very closely on those enforced by Williams College and Bowdoin College, both of which forbid students form participating in social clubs during their time as undergraduates.
...
The committee’s recommendations will likely draw heavy criticism from both alumni and undergraduates in social groups, who have repeatedly attacked the existing policy as overreaching and unnecessary."

Pretty ridiculous that this is even being considered.

I was in a arguably the most desirable sorority at a school where greek life was pretty dominating and I honestly wish all schools would ban frats. I think there are other ways to build social relationships and the frats/sororities at this point in time are more trouble than they are worth.

Having gone through the greek system I'm just happy I have boys not girls!

Desperately trying to push egalitarianism. What a joke.

Your boys should join a fraternity because they will get so much more tail. I'd also advise against a top 10 school because quality chicas is lacking, though liberal chics can be lots of fun

So, so ridiculous.

They aren't banning students from social groups, which would be an impossible task anyway. They are merely saying that the university is not going to sponsor or subsidize them, including provide them with housing space.

Well hopefully Harvard stops sponsoring ethnic clubs( Black Student Union, Hispanic Student Union, Asian Student Union, etc etc)

I went to both a school with frats and a school without them. The social scene was so much better at the school without frats. Fraternity brothers are morons.

This. There are plenty of colleges without Greek life and other types of non cohabitating social groups that can be joined.

Have you not seen what Harvard does to those in some groups?

Starting with Harvard’s Class of 2021, undergraduate members of unrecognized single-gender social organizations will be banned from holding athletic team captaincies and leadership positions in all recognized student groups. They will also be ineligible for College endorsement for top fellowships like the Rhodes and Marshall scholarships.

That is a HUGE consequence.

Exactly. They're banning the Greek system, to which I say, more power to them. I deliberately chose a college with no Greek system because I can't stand the idea begging a group to choose you, and then paying them for the "honor." No thanks. Just meet normal people and make normal groups of friends. You don't have to buy faux inclusiveness.

I agree, but would say the same about sorority girls.

Does this mean finals clubs too?

Finals clubs are the main target.
