Postpartum Farts

Anonymous
5 months postpartum and it's still hard to hold in farts, especially smaller ones or when I need to have a bowel movement. At this point is there any hope things will improve?

Have you talked to your ob abt this? After my tearing I had to go to a pelvic floor rehab place to work on better muscle control. Might be an option for you.

Are you doing any exercises, therapies etc, as its not going to improve on its own

Did this help? What were your issues before?

I had a 4th degree tear so had a lot to work through.

As of now I have zero remaining side effects from the tear. Lots of different muscles down there you can work on strengthening. Wouldn't hurt to just chat with your OB to see if he or she thinks it could help.

Very helpful-- thanks for responding! Would you mind sharing what kind of exercises and for long your rehab was to get better? Where did you go for the rehab? Thanks again

I had this issue after my c-section that was basically the result of massive constipation and ongoing straining that led to damage of those muscles, which were already strained/weak from pregnancy. I also did PT and things are now resolved, but I have to be very careful about staying regular and avoiding constipation.

I still have these issues and am 9 months PP. you need physical therapy provided by a women's health PT. You may also want a consult with a colo rectal surgeon. Are you having any other bowel control issues?

For all the PPs who had successful pelvic floor PT experiences, can you please say where you went/who you saw? I had 8 weeks of pelvic floor PT at VHC in 2014 and unfortunately it did not seem to help one bit. I have since had a second child and would like to give it a go again...

Carrie Pagliano at Georgetown is the best in town, IMHO.
