Paying for a vacation rental through a site

Anonymous
We're heading overseas with our 2 year old for the first time and thought it might be a good idea to get an aparment rather than a hotel, which is what we've always done. Found a place through a VRBO like site and the owner is asking us to put down a deposit (minimal really) through a wire transfer-the rest will be in cash upfront when we get there. Since we've never done this..is this the typical way. I'd rather do it through credit card, but not an option. Am I just paranoid?

Actually, the best way is to use credit card. However, there are some places that would rather ask for wire transfers and pay the balance in cash when you get there. Since this is your first time to travel with your child, I suggest that you look for an apartment that accepts credit card for convenience. You might encounter problems when you get there and they don't accept credit cards. Definitely, you wouldn't want to spoil your first vacation with your child.

I paid a deposit via paypal for a vacation rental when traveling alone with my one-year-old (and then paid cash upon arrival). I figured I could lose the $200 or thereabouts, and find a hotel if worst came to worst. It all worked out fine. Credit card is definitely more reassuring, but if the owner is an individual, not an agency or company, they may not have that capacity.
