'real' youth soccer forum or message board in DC Metro area?

I think we actually interacted with the guy who runs Potomac Soccer Wire early on in the VA travel soccer thread. Many of us loved the discussion forum they had there years ago, and the move to allow only commenting on the articles they infrequently post probably helped a lot to drive the popularity of the soccer threads here on DCUM. He was pretty defensive about the whole thing as I recall.

I think people could use talking-soccer for VA, DC and MD if they wanted. For a long time the only active posts there were in the MA, FLA, CT and Oregon forums, but a bunch of people from NY and NJ who got sick of backofthenet moved over and started a decent NY thread. I'm still not sure any of those offer a better platform than DCUM though. If you like the SoCal boards (and you are welcome to talk about SoCal all you want as far as I'm concerned--that part of the country is a model we should pay attention to), I'd recommend that you just try posting topics that interest you here, and then just ignore anyone who wants to drag the discussion down to pedestrian levels. There are more than a handful of serious and knowledgeable people here who you'd probably like interacting with.

Apologies for resurrecting this thread... but the noise level in the soccer threads has reached an epidemic. In the faint hope that this might take hold, you can increase your chances of your post being read by using a username here. It's the anonymity that drives the noise level up.

The problem here is that you have "parents" chiming in on a topic many know little about. It's all driven by people that think their kids are better than they actually are. I participate in other forums with like minded people that share lessons learned. So for a forum to be effective, it has to be driven by players and coaches, not disgruntle parents. Get away from "anonymous" if you want a honest discussion.

Long time lurker.

The problem is, and I was told this by good authority, is that the clubs/coaches actually pay attention or at least are indirectly aware of DCUM posts (but take them with a saltshaker of salt) and you get parents who have never played the game pushing their agendas and trumpeting their loyalty cards. The only honest posts on here are the ones from clear veterans who have "been there done that" so much with these club and league issues that they realize what only matters in the end is getting out there and training and having fun, often all on your own.

This place has too many lemmings who think signing up for umpteen zillion club options and paying a lot of money and pushing their agendas on DC Urban Mom actually translate into tangible differences in their children's soccer trajectories.

Would be great if someone could start a Reddit Forum for DMV soccer. Free, and You could up vote and down vote comments, and a better format for sub-comments.

I've never used Reddit. Just checked it out and wasn't really sure how to navigate to find models of the sorts of discussions you mean. Are there ongoing soccer threads there from other areas you could link to? I appreciate the recommendation to post under a user name, but would prefer to remain anonymous for a variety of reasons.

Also, I'd note that Big Soccer is a great platform for those who are primarily interested in talking about why soccer in the U.S. sucks.

I looked at Reddit too... not real obvious. I understand the desire for anonymity too... it's just another symptom of things wrong in our system that ppl don't want to be identified for their comments. Unfortunately it makes this sort of list very superficial.

i did a search for a couple of terms relevant, didnt find anything really similar to whats being discussed here.

without an account thats around 30 days active with some karma, cant create a subreddit. there is still anonymity behind the username but the post history is available.

could be interesting

I just spent a good time perusing socalsoccer and talking-soccer. the flaming and trolls are huge and a lot of redudant threads about ECNL and DA. We have the same discussions going on here beating the same dead horses. the volume here is significantly lower, but the same players are part of the discourse.

the biggest difference/issue here is the lack of organization into sport specific areas and the voluminous thread lengths.

Your second comment is interesting. I imagine if we had more specific topics here instead of a few big buckets, the threads would be easier to keep on topic. The moderator is very good about deleting off-topic or offensive posts if you use the report button and let him know what the problem is. Of course, there might not be a large enough volume of posters here to keep narrowly-focused topics lively.

Well spoken, anonymous.

The reason why nothing like socalsoccer forums in DMV is because there is not as much interest in soccer here. You need critical mass of users to sustain a forum. SoCal has more population but also more interest in soccer in that population.

The OP still never said what he/she is looking for specifically. Did you notice that? Anyhow, name a topic and let’s discuss, but my guess is it’s been discussed already. Here’s a topic - should a player concentrate on making their strong foot even stronger or their weak foot stronger (given limited time to address both)?

Well there are a couple things. one of the biggest is parents need to get out of the way of their kids and try to stop living through your kids.if your kids don't want to play soccer don't force them, let them figure it out. They will be happier. Second, stop forcing them to do extra training if they don't want to. I have seen coaches do the same bullshit training over and over, week after week, year after year.

Your son or daughter should be progressing with the training..They should be doing stuff that a 8 or 9-year-old is doing when they are 16 or 17. Lastly stop thinking that your kid is going to play college soccer and especially D1, you all need to think about how many kids are around here and the rest of the country...if your kid want it they will put the work in if they don't do not force them, i promise you they will burn out and quite sports, I have seen it enough.

And the other thing I have seen is they do all this extra training and one they get to like 16-18 years old the injuries start to creep up, why because the compounding day and day, month after month of training, of the same shit year after year adds up. You have to give them rest to refresh and allow their body to recovery. you all think your kids are going to go pro/ play college soccer but ill tell you like it is around 1-2% that will make it.

I have talked to many college coaches and I have been there myself. I will tell you many of your kids going into college will never make it with the attitudes they have and the work rate they have. It won't cut it.

sorry for ranting but we really need to take a step back see what's going on before you start blaming clubs or coaches. Many of the issues are the parents and kids themselves.

So I see the points that you made as being problems for the kids for sure but I don't see why your points result in why soccer is stagnant here. For example, kids train year round and at 16, old injuries pop up. Are you saying that US Soccer is stagnant because the best players are getting injured? Another example, you say that parents are pushing their kids and end up quitting. Are you saying that US Soccer is stagnant because our best players are ones being pushed by parents and end up quitting? Just as devil's advocate...let's say parents never get involved....sure there might be some happier kids playing video games but a lot less getting pushed and training hard. Happier kids=good (period)! I get that. Kids not playing as much soccer...not so good. There has to be a happy medium in there. This is just for me and my kid...I don't really care if he plays in college or not. I actually hope he is good enough to because that's his goal but I hope he chooses not to because college is difficult enough and I'd like him to enjoy college socially, etc as well. But at 11, 12, 13, 14 years old...they aren't mature enough to make these decisions/commitments. However, all my kid wanted to do at that age is be a great soccer player. But he didn't know how to do that. That's why parents get involved. I don't want my kid to miss his goal because he wasn't aware of what he should be doing. Another point is...youth performance training....why do you think kids come to you? Do you think a 11 year old wakes up and says...you know, I don't want to play video games today. I think I should find a S&C coach so I can work on my Long Term Athletic Development. Of course not. It's parents that "push" the kids along so they don't miss opportunities. I think I made a mess of my post, but I hope you get what I'm trying to say. And I've been on a lot of sidelines the past 10 years and never has a parents said...Little Johnny needs to play in college or any of that. All the parents I've been around, just want their kids to have the opportunities so they can be the best that they can be. Anyway...Happy Thanksgiving. : )
