Thomas will be back Sept 12-20. Any tips or advice? Any recommendations on place to stay overnight? The website had a couple places that were advertised such as Hershey Farm Inn.
We won't have enough time to do DW nearby, but I'm told the railroad has lots to do other than Thomas. |
Depends what you are looking for, but we stayed at the Best Western Eden Resport over 4th of July weekend. We had a two room suite which was perfect for our family of 4. THe room was nice and big and had been recently renovated. The hotel has three pools - although they may not be in use in Sept. There is also a small playground with a large pirate ship to climb on, which my kids LOVED. The restaurants at the hotel were good, too. There are tons of hotels in that area, but we loved the suites at this one and would definitely go back. We drove to Strasburg one day and it was probably about a 15 minute drive. The hotel is really close to downtown Lancaster, too. We did not go there for Thomas, but we did do the train ride and it was beautiful compared to the others I have done in Baltimore and Cumberland, MD. Lots of farms, fields, and open space. No idea what it is like when Thomas is there - I have heard it gets really crowded. |
It is SUPER crowded. Try to get one of the earliest reservations. Otherwise, you'll be parking 4 miles down the road and taking a shuttle. There's a museum across the street and another store down the street. I think there's plenty to do there. We stayed at Country Inn and Suites across from DW. It was eh for $150/night. Kind of like a residence inn. It was about 15 minutes away. In retrospect, we would have stayed at the Marriott in DT Lancaster as the eating options are better than fast food. |
Day out with Thomas is a zoo - and I think the place is better on a non-Thomas day. In addition to the Strasburg Railroad, there is a ton of train related things - we really loved the Pennsylvania Railroad Museum and the Toy Train museum there. We stayed a bit farther away in the Hotel Hershey, which is just a nice hotel with a great restaurant for brunch. If the kids want something interesting and a bit of a novelty, there is the caboose hotel there (Red Caboose Inn? Can't remember the name) - all the rooms are old cabooses refitted. I think a couple of them are large enough for a family of 4. |
