Greece - Santorini

We are going on getaway (sans kids) to Greece where I have never been. A few days in Athens and then it looks like a trip to Santorini. Just wondering if any DCUM had recommendations on places to stay in Santorini and whether they would recommend flying there or taking somekind of ferry.

I haven't been there in over 10 years, so I can't recommend a hotel. If you want to be close to the action, stay in Thira (Fira). Oia is beautiful, with lots of nice places to stay, but far from most beaches. Imerovigli has some nice places, and is walkable from Fira if you are fit. The sand at teh ebaches is volcanic. It is black, so it gets very hot. Wear something to protect your feet.
We flew there, and took the ferry back to Athens.

We flew there from Athens and stayed at the top of the mountains - the view was unbelievable. I really dont remember the names and there have been newer ones open since we last were there but I have to say it was one of the most amazing trips ever! Definitely dont take kids - it is so romantic!

We were there (backpacking) on our honeymoon, so can't recommend hotels But we took a slow-boat ferry into Santorini, and took the high-speed ferry (hydrofoil?), which was pleasant and really quite fast. But if you fly, definitely do a day trip out on to the water, as the view of the island from out there is really special. Also spent a day renting a motor scooter to get around - that was really special.

Have a wonderful time - it's a great Island, and I would love to get back!

I was there 10 years ago, but still hope to return to the same hotel I stayed in on Santorini, in Thira, called Enigma. Don't let the cheesy name deter you - it was incredibly beautiful, with rooms carved into the mountain, very reasonable, wonderful owners. Hope it's still there.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE Santorini. In my opinion, the most beautiful place in the world. I took the ferry going there and the view you had of the island from the sea was amazingly beautiful, so I would highly recommend the ferry. Whatever hotel you pick, make sure you get a view on the calderra, gorgeous, totally worth it. I actually stayed with a Greek family there, there are families that just rent out rooms to tourists, price was very reasonable, had a great view and even got to taste a traditional Greek breakfast! Finding the room was just luck, we had no reservation anywhere and a Greek woman who saw that we were looking for a place to stay waived at us and showed us her place. Pure luck!

We stayed in Oia on our Honeymoon - best place on earth. Our hotel was Esperas Traditional Houses - loved, loved, loved it. Pool, incredible deck, amazing views. Just the greatest spot on earth to have a drink and watch the sunset....every night. Thira was a little too "loud" and cruise-shippy for us (that's where they come in) We wanted something more quiet as we were on our honeymoon - we also had "loud" in Mykonos which was fun.

If you go to Oia, est at the restaurant 1800 - make a reservation in advance, probably. We've been married 8 years this month and I stil remember lots of detaisl (including some meals we had on our trip) to this day becuase it was so memorable.

We're going back for our 10th and plan to stay at Esperas again. Have fun!

Went to Greece two years ago and stayed in Thira. We liked Oia better and wished we had stayed there. Don't remember where we stayed but it was not particularly memorable. I would check tripadvisor in researching hotels, I find those users' reviews to be fairly reliable in terms of what to expect. We flew to Santorini and I would recommend doing the same. It was really cheap and the flight was quick. But they did serve some tasty pita chips in flight. You will have a great time, I'm sure. Best of luck in planning your trip!

If you take a ferry , be sure it is the superfast. otherwise it is a very long trip. Fly if you need to maximize your time, or do one way ferry and one way flight. Once in Santorini, I highly recommend you rent a scooter (do it through your hotel) and travel the island. You don't need a motorcycle license if you get the smallest scooter. Easy to learn and after a bout 5 minutes, you'll feel comfortable on it.

I was in Santorini about 10 years ago after I graduated college. My family is Greek and I have been to Greece many times, but that was the first time I went to Santorini.

My aunt and uncle took me and my little brother and we took the slow ferry- I think it was 10 hours from Athens. We sat first class but it was still looong and kinda hellish. The rec's for the fast ferry are right on the money.

They stayed with friends of theirs who had a house in the cliffs that was just amazing. My brother and I stayed at a hotel called Altana. It was beautiful. We each had our own room with private balcony.

I can't remember what town it was in, but I do remember being able to walk through all the little paths on the cliffs to the marketplace, etc.

My aunt and uncle do not scrimp corners and we ate at the best restaurants, etc.

It was great!
