For DD's first birthday we are having a luau-themed party. It's August, and it will be likely be HOT so I want to avoid grilling. I was going to make roasted pork for sandwiches. Does anyone have ideas for other dishes I can make? There will be kids and adults at the party. Most of the kids are around 1-2 so I want to make some food they can eat as well.
Thanks in advance. |
Poi. Nutritious but don't know if anyone will really like it. |
My only suggestion for the little ones would be pineapple - nutritious and refreshing in the heat!! Also, maybe a birthday cake in the shape of a hula girl would be cute!!
Another idea for the little ones might be a take on hawaian pizza with ham and pineapple on it! |
I'm sure you'll have a cake ordered for your little one, but perhaps you could also serve mini pineapple upside down cakes? They're easy to make (mini-bundt pans from Crate & Barrel) and can be served room temp. You can serve it with coconut ice cream or sorbet.
Other menu items could be: - Shrimp & Pineapple Skewers - Potstickers - Mixed Greens & Tropical Fruit with vinaigrette dressing For the kids, you can mix it up by serving the following: - Chicken Tenders - Fruit Salad - definitely agree with PP about Hawaiian pizza! Signature drink: Kids: Pineapple Smoothies or Virgin Pina Coladas Adults: Mai Tai and Luau Lager (made in Hawaii) - go to Ace Beverage on New Mexico, NW Overall Look: - Wrap your tables in grass hula skirts - Give your guests a lei when they arrive - Ask your guests to dress tropical (ie: men in Hawaiian shirts) Have fun! Sounds like a great party. Makes me wish my babies were born in the summer, too! |
Trader Joe's sells these cute little coconut sorber desserts-- it's a tiny coconut filled with delicious coconut sorbet. Looks cute, tastes great, no preparation at all. I love them.

Not the OP, but wow, 20:50, would you plan ALL my parties?
Can't wait for the luau, OP! |
Is the party going to be outside? If so, watch out that the pork doesn't spoil in the heat. Pork isn't as "hardy" as some cooked meats at room/outside temps. PPs have good ideas so I won't repeat. |
Pig roast. The kids will love it. |
20:50 here and I'd be happy to plan any parties - for free, too! Parties make me happy ![]() |
NP and I agree! 20:50, I'm sure your parties are fun! |
OP here. Thanks ladies! These are excellent suggestions. And yes, I want to be invited to 20:50s parties! ![]() |
Sounds like fun. Maybe play some Hawaiian party music and have a hula contest? |
Coconut shrimp. You can buy frozen in bulk and heat up in the oven. Serve with some sweet pinapple-ish dipping sauce or duck sauce. Good finger food and easy to make a lot at a time. |
i noticed a lot of hawaiian foods at world market. they have trader vic's mai tai mix (virgin unless you add rum). also maybe serve rumaki. |
I think I am going to this party. ![]() All of the suggestions are great. I have a lot of Hawaiian music (no idea where it came from), and can bring the CDs to the party if you want. Can't wait! |
