How many hours do you ACTUALLY work at work?

No.

Wow.

Your comment is too stupid to deserve a response, but I'll bite. Working mothers should be "ashamed" for being out of the house?
This isn't a WOHM-bashing thread. Go start your own thread, you ignoramus.

My fellow time-wasters, where do you work? Private sector, government, where? Just curious!

I'm in a non-profit association. My area of focus is health and health care.

I really don't feel guilty for wasting time, because the way I look at it, organizations/employers basically have people on retainer, in a sense. Meaning, if I would quit my job and only work as a contractor/consultant they would be paying me a hell of a lot more. So part of my salary is deadline-based projects, but part is sitting around in case something happens. And stuff happens all the time, so I'm not sitting around a lot, but when I am I don't feel bad about it.

I work 32 hours a week over 4 days, and I must say I waste almost as much time at work (which isn't a ton, but is some time) as when I worked full time, 5 days a week. I think I'm just more efficient.

Also, sometimes I just have to sit in on a webinar or something, and if it's a topic I know well I listen for the highlights while surfing the web, etc.

I skip lunch as I like leaving earlier in the afternoon. On some days, I work, work, work. On others, when it's slow, I may work 6 hours a day. I try to find things to keep me busy. I have my own office but try to limit internet time in case someone walks in. I used to read the the news faithfully daily, but have limited my reading because it's too damn depressing.

I work for at least 7 hours of the 8 hours that I am in the office. I used to slack off more, but my job is very demanding and if I don't get work done at the office, I take it home with me. So there is an incentive to work hard. (I am also at a nonprofit organization.) It feels good to be productive and I'm much happier with myself at the end of the day than when I was not as productive at work.

I work a full 15 hours out of my 15 hour work week.

I believe we work at the same place. Never thought about the "retainer" concept, but it makes me feel better!

The remainder of the time I surfed the internet, journaled, ordered birthday invitations, paid bills, emailed friends, went out to lunch, talked to my mom, and researched vacation houses (can't afford it, but had some fun.)

It is a Christmas freakin miracle that I haven't been fired yet.

I'm the OP. I'm almost embarrassed to say this about sums it up for me some weeks. Last week I probably worked half of the amount I should have. This week I have some deadlines, so I'm chugging along a little bit better, but look at me, still on DCUM...

At least I know I'm not the only one.

Well, a mom needs some time for herself - and sometimes the office is the place to get it!

If any of you guys are gov't. employees or contractors paid by the hour, this troubles me a lot.

Nope, not government or a contracter.

Ok- as long as I'm not paying for your slacking.

I'm neither, but this shouldn't bother you. I do really good work. I'm smart, efficient, and when things need to be done I get them done. I think a lot of people are like that (certainly some aren't). The fact is, you have downtime. I'm one of the posters who works 4 days (and only gets paid 4 days) yet my workload has not gone down. So essentially I took a pay cut yet I'm doing the same amount of work (it's worth it - I get an extra day at home).

So I REALLY don't feel bad. My company is a getting a great deal.

I can't speak for everyone, but if you ever worked in an office, you would know downtime is a fact of life.

I can't add much more to what 14:26 said, so I will just say a big fat DITTO. Downtime is a fact of office life, as is going into overdrive when urgent projects come up.
