Soccer Coach in Northern VA - Ask me anything

Being on the local club's A team will always be an option, and if he's in DA for a year and for some reason you don't like it, they will take him back with open arms. If the DA a fit, then stay with it. Not every kid as an opportunity to be in a DA program, so if your son has it, try it out for a year and see how it goes.

For the question about an '06 girl - which area teams / coaches would I like?

I believe Arlington Red & White are doing well in this age group. The coach must be doing something right.

I may have mentioned DC Stoddert before... Karen Kelser is working the U11/U12 age groups and she is a very good teacher of the game to both to players and other coaches. I have a lot of respect for her expertise.

Loudon looks good, this fellow Dan Raben (never heard his name before, but read his bio) seems to know what he's doing with Loudon Red, the top team. - http://www.loudounsoccer.com/techstaff/ (scroll to bottom).
The loudon coaches for 06G Red, 06G Black, 06G White, and 06G Silver look pretty good on paper at least.

Mclean - nobody at U11 who I can really say the same track record of any of the people mentioned by name above. Who knows though, I haven't even seen the team in action.

SYA - CAROLYN RICE....If I had a daughter, I'd want her to play for Carolyn.

Bethesda - I think Sam Roos the daughter of Brad Roos. I'm sure she's been around soccer since age 1 and knows what she's doing.

SYC has Harry Okopu coaching the U11 girls, he is the technical director there.

That's about all that stands out to me at the moment.

Let's pretend commute distance is not a factor here - these would be my choices

1. SYA - Carolyn Rice, my #1 choice here.
2. Arlington - Team seems to be doing very, very well
3. Loudon - Quality age group staff coaches across the board, mutiple teams
4. DC Stoddert - Karen Kelser
5. Bethesda - Sam Roos, Bethesda has good girls teams every year
6. Mclean - Just because its McLean which traditionally is decent on the girls side
7. SYC - Technical Director is coaching the U11 girls

So you wouldn't send your daughter to Braddock Road to try the new U12 training/scrimmage only programming they are switching to? Perhaps they are not on list because you don't know who the coach is this year? They are still in CCL, but leaving the league next year.

That is correct. From what I have heard, the scrimmage only trend has started in england among big-name youth academies at younger age groups whose coaches felt the pressure to win every single game because of their name brand.

Like man united, arsenal, etc has U9 and U10 teams and there is a lot of pressure on those kids to win games because of the club they play for. So scrimmaging makes sense in that case because they are aiming to develop future professionals out of already elite elite youth players that have already been identified and scouted out of literally thousands of boys.

Im not sure if that translates well to the US just yet. I believe BRYC is trying to follow suit in that way but I dont think pulling teams out of leagues is going to be a magic pill that somehow makes all of the players better.

If I can piggy back on this question.

Coach what is your take on the BRYC change to a scrimmage only league prior to ECNL? I have heard the case that games dont develop players etc however I feel that it does to motive kids to play. Also thinking long term in regards to the travel should my child make it on the ECNL team.

Also pulling out of leagues saves thousands of dollars on fees for U9-U12. Maybe BRYC will charge less or the $ will be allocated to the older age groups for something.

To me it seems like BRYC will have 2 separate programs... U13 and older and U12 and below.

U12 and below will see a good number of players migrate to other clubs and then come back for U13 tryouts. The U12 and below will be a benefit to BRYCs ODSL players and those lower down on rosters since they get bumped up but I dont see their most talented players (parents, really) sticking around at younger ages without actual games.

U13 tryouts will be quite large.

In a league, everyone takes it more seriously and i think the players benefit. There is a place for scrimmages, but losing a "real" game has lessons for the kids just as much as winning does. Kids need to experience the emotions of winning, losing, and tying games other than just "oh well that was just a scrimmage". Leagues also provide a regularity of opponents, with some being easy, hard, or evenly matched.

So BRYC essentially will have 2 completely different programs, U12 and below and U13 and above. Playing U12 at BRYC may not prepare you for the level of play at U13 when some of the best talent in the area shows up at tryouts.

So i think the U9-U12 age groups will really get watered down in terms of talent but that wont matter because the U13 tryout should have plenty of it.

The BRYC U12G coaching staff is probably one of the best you'll see

If youre at BRYC and currently a U12 then youll be moving to U13 next year anyway so the changes wont impact you.

if youre a current U11 its a question of if you want to try out the format or its worth switching clubs for a year or not. If you stick it out for a year with the new format, 1 year of it may not make a huge difference.

For Current U10s and especially the U9s (and rising U9) so the 2007s, 2008s, and 2009s theres more of a decision to make.

Do you think it's a good idea for an 05 boy to play up with the 04 DA if asked to? Or to request that he stay with his current A team and play 05 DA next year, not 04 DA? He isn't that big, I worry about him getting knocked down a lot and injured.

He has been practicing with the 04 DA the last few weeks and doing well.

Although some of them will likely be going elsewhere because their parents weren't planning to be in a division that has as many opponents in Massachusetts as it has in Maryland/Virginia.

What MASS team is in ANY division in ANY league that BRYC would play in?

That is a very logistically unpleasant looking conference. Compare with the U13/14 boys DA North Atlantic one: http://www.ussoccerda.com/2016-u-13-14-club-map
