Hello, Our baby is due July 2008, and everyone is telling us to start looking for childcare now. I plan to go back to work in mid-November. It seems about the right time to start getting on daycare lists, but is it too early to start looking into nanny shares?
Also, I'd welcome any general suggestions on what's important to look for in a nanny situation. Is it better to get one near home or work? I live in Silver Spring and work in downtown DC. It would be nice to have the baby near me during the day, but I don't know if I want to take him/her on Metro. Thanks! |
Now is the time for day care centers.
For a nanny or nanny share- I'd say no more than 2mos before you need it to begin. 4-6 weeks being a better time frame. Many nannies are looking for work now or within the near future- not planning ahead for a year from now. |
Ditto PP. Do you have a share partner yet? We found our share partners a month after DS was born and went through the nanny picking process together. It usually works best that way so that you both agree on the nanny and the nanny gets to know both parents/kids prior to employment. A friend hired a nanny and then found a share partner and it didn't work out b/c the nanny hated their share partners. They ended up keeping the nanny and dumping the share partner which was both awkward and expensive. Good luck! BTW, I was on some daycare lists for over a year (and am happy with my share so dropped them) so it's never too early to sign up! |
I am also due in July and starting this process. Can anyone tell me how much nanny shares usually end up costing? Say for a full 5 days/wk, 8:30-6:00.
thanks |
Between $16-20/hr. |
