In the past 6 months alone there have been 3 acquaintances of mine (Facebook) who have severely injured themselves while participating in recreational league sports.
1) Scraped entire arm while playing softball. Needed stitches. 2) Fractured foot while playing basketball. 3) Concussion while playing hockey. I just wanted to know how common is this? Grown adults injuring themselves while playing in rec league games that man absolutely nothing. Rec league bragging rights or office bragging rights is not worth fracturing a foot over. |
Maybe they like being active.
People hurt themselves playing sports in their teens and 20s and people hurt themselves in many different ways unrelated to sports, too. |
Weekend warriors. Some people love playing sports but the bigger you are, the harder you fall. None of those injuries seem all that bad to me, except for the concussion which I hope was mild. |
I forgot to mention acquaintance #2 proudly posted several pictures of himself being wheeled away on an ambulance stretcher. ![]() |
You can get hurt walking down the street. At least your friends are having fun with like-minded friends when they get hurt. And they get a fun story out of it.
|
After a certain age, YES. I've noticed this never used to happen, but now, when my circle is 40-50, it happens more often than not. |
I used to work at a tennis club where they had 11 tennis courts, and ripped one out to make it a multi-sport court where roller hockey, basketball, etc. could be played.
It wasn't about bragging rights. It was about having fun with friends. They were playing basketball with friends, almost like they used to when they were kids. It was fun. That's it. Sometimes when you play you get hurt. I sent many a 40 yr old across the street to the hospital, and gave even more 40 yr olds bags of ice to put on bumps. |
+1 It must be sad to be no fun, with few friends, and probably out of shape. Signed, 3 Day a Week Softball Player. |
I play in a rec league because I played that sport all through high school and college. I enjoy it, it's a great stress relief, and it keeps me in good shape. Some people have gotten injured while playing...kind of happens as we get older! No one really does it for bragging rights |
At least they're out being active, having fun, and actually enjoying their lives.
I mean, we could talk about the guys who put out their backs putting on their socks, got diagnosed with diabetes this week because they're 40lbs overweight, or just had to readjust their high blood pressure meds again and they're still under 50. Personally, I know which side of the fence I want to be on. |
But the games mean absolutely nothing.
At least the Wizards (as terrible as they are) are getting paid to lose. |
Remember that commercial, "we don't stop playing because we get old. We get old because we stop playing." |
Go hard or go home! |
DH had not one but two ACL surgeries b/c of softball, another guy on their team broke his nose. Not unusual. |
Yup, very normal. And they don't even have to be hard core |
