How far in advance to do wait lists?

Anonymous
I'm due in Feb, and we will have childcare covered until the kiddo is about 1 (or, actually, walking). At that point we'll be looking at day cares or in home day care or something.

For daycare, what happens if you get off a wait list and aren't ready to enroll for a few months?

Any advice on how to strategize on this?

Get on the lists now. I got on a bunch of lists the day I found out I was pregnant and my son got his slot when he was 16 months old. It was worth waiting for.

To answer your question about getting off the waitlist before you're ready, different centers handle it differently. Some let you "pass" and stay at the top of the list. With others, you lose the opportunity entirely. If you're close to needing it, you can always pay to hold the spot.

HTH & good luck!

No kidding...DO. IT. NOW. I thought everyone was crazy telling me to apply the day I found out I was pregnant. Now I'm at home with a 2.5 year old and 4 month old and scurrying about trying to find child care... I have NO CHOICE but to plunk down a fortune for a nanny since I can't even consider any daycares with their 2 year wait lists. In-home care seems difficult to find/assess...it's overwhelming!

Yes, get on lists now for Feb 2011ish. Some centers plan their enrollment out pretty far in advance so by getting on the list early with the time frame you need, they may be able to slot you in now, at least tentatively. It also is very important that you follow up (politely) and reiterate the approximate date you expect to need care.
