We're moving to Mo.Co soon and want to see if we can find a list of school rankings--even if it's just elementary schools. We found one from 1997 but obviously that was awhile ago. Anyone have a link?
Thanks!!! |
www.greatschools.net can give you a simplified version, with test scores represented on a scale of 1-10.
You can also check the "school-odex" for details on individual schools, including facts at a glance and surveys of parents and kids: http://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/schools/ |
There's no 'ranking' of MCPS schools, per se. Schools are complex, and you might be looking for a variety of features. Size; test scores; diversity are all quantitative indicators that you can read about... but there's the school culture and climate, too, to consider.
Check out the Maryland State Department of Education "Maryland Report Card" web site for info on the proportion of students in each school who score proficient or advanced on the state assessment, broken down by race/ethnic groups and special services groups like ESOL. You can also find school by school information in MCPS publication called "Schools at a Glance." Keep in mind that the higher-scoring schools tend to be those that have higher-income families attending. This is not a phenomenon unique to MCPS -- it's a general socio-demographic rule of thumb. I would say that a child can get a good education at just about any MCPS school, though. Maybe you want to ask which schools have the 'best' principals, because leadership really does make a difference. But principals come and go, don't they. ![]() |
AISGW (The Association of Independent Schools of Greater Washington) has a joint statement with NAIS (Nat'l. Association of Independent Schools) on the topic of school ranking, found here: http://www.aisgw.org/school_resources/naisranking.asp. It's a well-written position on the inherent dangers of school ranking.
