We are headed out to California over Christmas. I have a 14 and 11 year old. We've done Disney before and really like it. We are definitely a Disney family! However we are thinking of trying Universal Studios instead. My daughter is a huge Harry Potter fan, but we are not a huge fan of big thrill rides (one of the reasons we like Disney). Can anyone who has been to both compare them? Pros/cons? Anyone else who has been just to Universal? Can you give us some insight? |
We plan to do both Disneyland and Universal Hollywood with our 6yo and 8yo.
We have done Universal Orlando and Disney World in Florida. I would think Universal would be more enjoyable for your children's ages, esp if you have already gone to Disney previously. |
I've done both, many times. Universal is fun, especially if you know and love movies. The rides aren't really major roller coasters (though the simpsons one was more than I was expecting, and the transformers one was pretty intense, but definitely not roller coaster flip you upside down screaming)
If you've already done disney, I'd definitely do universal. |
Universal over Christmas would be all sorts of depressing. Their Harry Potter area is not as immersive as Orlando's. |
I would do Disneyland and get the park hopper pass so you can go to California Adventure too. |
Disneyland is a nightmare compared to Orlando. So crowded. Skip it. |
I always thought Disneyland was less crowded than Disney World. |
Different demos. Most Disneyland guests are locals. Sundays are busy and also after 5 on weekdays. |
Universal Studios in LA has a great tour - its 45 mins long and takes you past the Desperate Housewives street (which includes houses from previous shows and movies), Bates Motel etc. Its fantastic. Loved it and the kids loved it too. |
OP: Why depressing? |
Not a holiday vibe. The park is quite small. Mostly screen based attractions. |
Universal for sure. Disney Land is so "small" and for that age, the rides are not as great. I LOVE Disney. Have been there 16+ times. I would not go back to Disney Land. Once was enough. Disney World = yes. Universal Studios Orlando = YES. They will have a ton of fun at Universal Studios Hollywood - lots to do for that age. |
Yes on the studio tour! I think Universal decorates for Christmas (I know the one in Orlando does--never been to the Hollywood park during Christmas), so it won't be depressing. |
Universal is good for that age. Plus, it's close. Disneyland is dang far away! |
