i was the victim of identity theft and so i've had to go through my credit reports with a fine-toothed comb (several times) recently and i am surprised at how different they all are. is this true for others?
i expected that the fraudulent accounts (mostly store charge cards) would vary quite a bit, but what i found odd was that things like my student loans (have had them for years and years) show up on two reports, but not all three. ditto some credit cards that i've had forever. is that weird? don't get me started on what a nightmare this entire thing has been.... |
Please tell us how the identity theft happened. Most people still want to keep their head in the sand about this issue. For instance, I no longer have my address imprinted on my checks. In fact all I have is my first initial and my last name. My bank manager told me that the more you put on it, the easier it is for identity theft. |
i don't actually know how it happened. the best theory i have is that afer i moved from one city to another, someone at my old address intercepted my mail that was properly forwarded and either used my info or sold it. i say this because my old address and not my current address was used in the fraudulent acconts.
i highly recommend you place a security freeze on all three of your credit accounts. |
It actually isn't that unusual. Different companies report to different bureaus. This is also why they always tell you to check all three because the information may vary depending on the credit bureau. |
We are applying for a mortgage and I was just talking about this with my broker today. My 3 credit scores vary 90 points! Apparently, not every credit company reports to every agency, some only report to one or two. |
