The hallmark of "refined' taste is complexity. Take any subject or area you want - the more refined option is the one that is more complex or profound- either to make, understand, appreciate etc. The more refined option is one that is not mass market and not easily accessible by all.

Eg classical music instead of pop. Some rock is amazingly complex. Not country music.
Ditto with art, food, books etc

If you use those guidelines, you will be able to pick the refined option in most cases. Life will be deathly dull however
