Goody bags

Anonymous
I am at a loss for what to give as goody bags for my 5 year old's birthday. I don't want to spend a lot of money and I don't want to give junk...

Any ideas?

My son had a Spiderman theme for his 5th birthday. So I gave Spiderman kites (the plastic kind that were $2 at TRU) and glow necklaces. Both were a big hit. The biys spent a ton of time running back and forth in my backyard trying to fly their kites.

They have these cute cups with a dirt pellet and seed (watermelon, sunflower) at Lowes and garden stores. Kids love to grow things.

How about a cookie decorated/shaped in the theme of the party?

paperback books. sometimes borders/amazon does buy 3 get one free, or something like that. if you get a good selection of $4 or so dollar books, each kid can pick one. or all the same book if you have a theme and can find a book with something similar. doesn't have to be in a bag or more than one thing, right?

Honestly, I really think kids love the plastic junk that you can get at party city or places like that. Things like bouncy balls, silly sunglasses, crazy straws, plastic animals, etc.

Kids may like it for a minute but then they forget about it at home and the parents end up throwing it in the trash.

Why don't you contribute to ending this ridiculous practice and skip the goodie bags? I don't think I ever got a goodie bag when I went to a party when I was a kid. I managed to survive, somehow.

There's always one nutter in the pack!

No, YOU are the NUTTER. Why should you reward the other kids for coming to your party? You invited them to a party! It's not like they ate a plate of broccoli or helped you move.

make that 2 nutters. gift bags are silly. as the OP acknowledges, no one ever (and rightly so) wants to spend a lot of money on them. and you can't really (let's be honest) get anything worthwhile (read: no plastic garbage) for such a little amount. don't waste your $1 on my kid. she doesn't want your potted plants or your target crap. stop the madness! you don't have to thank my child with a goody bag for coming to your party! she (like most normal people) just loves playing with her friends and having cake. she doesn't need to be thanked for coming -- she understands (at least we're trying to get her to understand) that the party is celebrating her friend's birthday. so it's the friend that receives the gifts and attention. the birthday celebrant gets his/her day just like she gets hers. moms that feel the need to give goody bags are just in competition. good luck with the race!

I found a bunch of mini slinkies at Target. I gave one each and kiddie post its with mini markers. They were all in the $1 bins.

I think slinkies are fun...and pen and paper is always a hit. Kids love to draw.

I like the markers/paper and slinky ideas.

I second this idea; we've done this before with a small book that went with the theme of the party.
