Can anyone recommend a fun hotel or resort to stop at between DC & Portland Maine. We are flexible on our route, and happy to take an extra day or two for a fun hotel. Doing camp pick up in Maine and want to make a road trip better for me & our other child riding along!
Thinking something with an indoor or outdoor pool, maybe a spa, just something a little different than the standard roadside hotel/ worth taking time off from the drive. |
Ocean House, Rhode Island |
Thanks, looks really nice. Have you been there with kids? |
Or, if you want to do the inland route and avoid 95 as much as possible, check out Mohonk Mountain House. |
Not yet - on my to do list - but everyone I know who has has raved about it! |
This. RI is out of the way. But I suppose new paltz is well north of the tappin zee |
Mohonk Mountain looks nice
Anyone tried Wentworth by the Sea in Portsmouth, NH? |
Do not go to Maine via 95 thru RI -- that is an awful routing. I am sure you can find a place ib the Hudson River valley or Western Mass. that would be nice. I would stay in NYC before I detoured to Westerly. |
Too early in the trip IMO and nothing special, though I do love NYC in general. |
Maps all sending me up 95, will try again going through Hudson River valley / western mass instead of 95 through RI which is what I was planning. Thanks for tips! |
If you can find a place in the southern Hudson valley and then head east on 84 instead of 90 that would be better in terms of routing.
But mohonk is very nice. |
Mass MOCA is wonderful and worth a day trip - I'm sure there are nice hotels near there if you want to do Western Mass. Mt Tom would be fun for the kids. |
OP I am not sure what age/interests your other child is. MassMoca can be surprisingly fun for children (given its a modern art museum) but other possibilities in Western Mass. would be the basketball hall of fame, or maybe Old Sturbridge Village (sort of like Colonial Williamsburg-- another option like that is Strawberry Banke in Portsmouth but that's pretty far north).

Basketball hall of fame is a great idea, but isn't that out of the way between dc & Portland?
Thanks so much to everyone for tips. Doing the drive on my own with our 10 year old, hoping to make it fun instead of stressful! |
No-- the BB HoF is in Springfield Mass., almost directly on the way (google maps suggests driving via Springfield adds about 15 minutes to the 9+ hr drive). good luck! |
