At what age did your kids get to school by themselves?

My DD started in 4th. I set the timer for 5 minutes before she has to leave. She also comes home alone until her older sister gets home an hour later.

LOL my 9 yo still calls me in the bathroom to wash his hair and set out clothes for school the next day. He does not like being left alone. DD11 is completely independent and usually watches over her brother. He has anxiety issues and can not be left alone.

DD started taking the train on her own to her Saturday morning class when DH and I had a scheduling conflict and she would have to go alone or miss that week. It was near the end of 5th grade. She started walking to school in 7th grade. Before that, we lived too far away for her to walk.

Thank you answers. Much depends on the distance between school and home, the need for transport and how you prepare the child to do so. At some point in time, parents should stop to interfere in the life of the child and start trust adolescent as best friend. However, we know that the responsibility lies with the parents, and we need to control the situation. I need always to know where my children are, http://www.phonespyapps.com/spy-on-your-kid especially when they say they are going to ride a bike. I choose to use modern technological possibilities. First, it takes a few hours, then more - per day. And at some point, I should be ready to allow my children to go to the countryside with an overnight stay or visit another city.

Depends on how busy the road there is, as well as if the area is isolated or there would be other kids walking.

6th grader takes public transportation (bus) to MS by herself. Take metro (several stops) by herself to get to an after school class.
