Can I have Dairy Queen? I really want it, but...

I had a woman here at work (not pregnant) nearly ex-communicate a pregnant woman here for having a cup of coffee, and then proceed to tell me how she feels bad for her friend with gestational diabetes because she can't drink beer anymore. coffee = satan, beer = in the clear? for pregnancy?

i would avoid the wine and indulge in the ice cream.

Actually, a UK study has PROVEN that moderate alcohol consumption is fine during pregnancy, and may even be beneficial to the child. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/health/3285792/Pregnant-women-can-drink-a-small-glass-of-wine-a-week.html

What makes you think anyone cares what you have to say if it is just to talk about how great you are and/or how much better you are than others?

The original poster (and the woman who asked a question about cheese in another post) didn't suggest that they were horrified or fearful; they asked simple questions in -- shockingly enough -- an anonymous forum designed to be an area of discussion for pregnant moms. The questions were not based on rumors or "idiocy," they were grounded in medical science and were legitimate questions. (But, oh my, those attention seekers posting anonymously to other moms - the nerve!) That you equate a simple question with some state of psychological distress is more reflective of your own personality than theirs. Clearly from your post you are far more worked up about this than they are. Interesting.

Hopefully you were just having a bad day, as we all do from time-to-time, because I'd hate to think you walk around all day filled with such judgment and disdain. Certainly can't be good for your kids. Here's hoping today is better for you.

Thank you for this post, and also to the 9:47 I believe who called the nasty woman out. Apparently she has never met anyone who may have had a devastating pregnancy loss.

I definitely over-reacted about stuff while I was pregnant, but unless you are my husband who had to deal with it, I'll kindly ask you to butt the f- out! I can assure you it was not to draw attention to myself. What? I don't even see that connection.

Some of us may feel vulnerable for particular reasons. Try not to be so judgmental.

I'm the PP above and I just realized I probably freaked out a bunch of first time pregnant women with the "devastating pregnancy loss" stuff.

It's easy to forget but we must remember - most, most, most people have healthy healthy healthy pregnancies!!!!!!!!! Serious complications are rare.

I do think the poster that called everyone out, however rude and judgmental she was, had at least one valid point buried somewhere in her post - and that is we do over-react because of all the information we have available these days. I do envy my mom who never had to worry about this stuff when she was having babies in the 1970s. But the fact is, many of us on this forum are educated women and yes, we can go overboard, but our intentions are good and there's no need to feel like an asshole because of it.

I don't know about DQ, do ask them whether they use raw egg as one of the ingredients.
When I was pregnant, I avoided Freddy's frozen custard because they told you they use raw egg white in it. That's the only one I craved, so I didn't have any. However, most ice cream sold in grocery store use pasteurized milk and don't have raw egg, you do need to read the ingredients section carefully.

I am not even sure that there is actual dairy in their ice cream, ha ha!

Nonetheless, this is news to me and I have eated a LOT of soft ice cream between this pregnancy and the last so I hope it is ok!

Dairy Queen's product cannot even be called ice cream. You won't find the words ice cream anywhere in their store. It's actually called ice milk. Their product has the maximum amount of air allowed to be in a product (over run) at 100%. Don't ask me how I know this.

You may even want to check into that - raw egg can be pasteurized.

Just got back. Had a dipped cone, but went for the butterscotch and dipped my french fries in it!!!

I'll report back if I become gravely ill and jeopardize my unborn child.

French fries dipped in butterscotch ice cream??? Oh PP, I hadn't had morning sickness until now. I think you just brought it on. eewwwww!

I've been avoiding it as well based on what I've heard, but I just called my OB and they gave me the green light on DQ. When in doubt call your doctor - I'm sure glad I just did!

The thing that gets me about Listeria and all the stuff to avoid is the fact that unless you've grown it in your backyard, you have no idea what your food has been exposed to. Who knows if your lettuce was downstream from a meat plant, or if your spaghettios were packaged improperly. With all the craziness lately in food safety, it seems to me that it's all a gamble, no matter what. So I ate sushi, deli meat, mayo, etc. whenever I felt like it. Especially when it was highly likely that my Panera salad was prepared by the same person who just made a sandwich with deli meat, using the same gloves.

Never heard of this pregnancy restriction. I've had a serious milkshake craving - having at least 1 a week lately and haven't had any problems and I'm pretty sure they make them with the same ice cream from the soft serve machine (at McDonalds)...

I ate it once or twice while I was pregnant. I had never heard that you couldn't. Go for it.

I didn't really know about the listeria risk from soft-serve ice cream, though I did know about it for soft cheeses, and avoided those. I'm typically lactose-intolerant, but for some reason, pregnancy made me lactose tolerant. So i had a LOT of ice cream, including soft serve from DQ every couple weeks during the summer. My daughter and I were both fine.
