My son is having a bout of croup, that is now just turning into a regular throaty cough with a runny nose. He doesn't seem too bothered by it, but I feel for him and think his throat has got to feel raw.
This is what I am doing: - Nebulizer for the croup - steam bathroom before sleep (nap and bedtime) - saline spray - snot sucker when he lets me - cool mist humidifier Anything else you do that you think works to make a little one feel more comfortable? |
We use Zarbee's, which is mostly just honey, so I suppose you could just use honey. |
DD got a fever and horrible cough. I gave her honey as needed, lots of fluids and diffused tea tree oil at night. It only hung around for a day and a half, then was completely gone. |
+1 on Zarbees. And I use the night time Zarbees as needed as night when the cough keeps him up all night. |
Dimetapp cough and cold as long as you aren't givinh anything else. I give my 33 lber 3.76 mL. |
If you're fighting the croupy cough at night, cold air (like outside bundled up, if it's really cold) is more effective than even warm, moist air. We would also sometimes cosleep so he could be more propped up and we could watch him. |
Vick's VapoRub on the feet. I'm never sure whether it helps or not but it doesn't hurt. |
We also do the Vick's Vapor Rub on the feet, and Zarbee's or honey on a spoon. Sometimes Benadryl if he's really having trouble sleeping (he has lots of allergies anyway so I know what dose works for him). |
"Honey tea" -- basically a big spoonful of honey dissolved in warm water in a mug with a straw. |
I've done this, with a little bit of lemon juice. I've also just mixed honey and lemon juice as homemade Zarbees. |
+1 When DS had croup, we used to alternate time at night standing in the bathroom breathing in the steam from the shower, with standing in front of the open freezer door. Fun times, but it worked. |
Fresh Oregano Leaves with honey and lemon would help. You need to steam the leaves and squeeze. Mix with a small amount of honey and lemon. |
I've done these:
Peppermint oil under the tongue Vick's Vapo Rub on neck/chest, hand towel loosely wrapped around the neck (so fumes can rise), towel closed at the back and the neck with an old diaper pin, safety or diaper clips towel to front inside of pjs honey in weak peppermint tea propped up bed or pillows to prop (and along sides to keep kid from rolling) lots and lots of water, a few drops of mio or similar if that makes the child want to drink more gargle salt water (salt won't cause pain if there aren't any open sores, may cause the child to hack up lots of mucus, will make sure that germs aren't breeding like crazy in child's mouth) gargle baking soda water (freshens breath, no pain, stimulates saliva, may cause child to hack up mucus) hot towel straight from dryer to lay across child's chest |
