Why don't people wear seat belts?

Anonymous
My husband has buried 5 childhood friends because they weren't wearing seat belts and were ejected from their vehicles. Had they been wearing them, all would have survived.

NP here. That's nonsense. I could be drunk, tired or ill and I always wear a seatbelt. It's just what I do when I get in a car.

Well, I guess you're just a better person than all these people on the second line of this NHTSA survey.

Not better, but it is such an ingrained habit I put my seat belt on even if seating in the car without plans to move it for a time.

Those that claim to have forgotten, I bet are not as regular seat belt users as they think.

Right, it's not the fall that kills. It's the sudden stop.

Some would still be alive if they had worn seat belts.

I just was reading that story. To be so beautiful and smart, she made a really stupid decision.

Wear your seat belts. Even if you're going 5 mins up the road.

Well, that and they're all idiots.

My brother used to be like that. He's a libertarian type who didn't feel like wearing one and why should the government tell him what to do and blah blah blah. Well, in college he got so many tickets for it (go you, local New England police!) that he finally gave in and started wearing it. A few years later, he was struck from the back by a driver going about 100 mph while messing with the CD player. His car was a ball of tinfoil, but he was saved by the Subaru...and his seat belt.

In the 5-hour course they teach that seat belts should not be anywhere near your neck. They should go across the shoulder/ upper arm and chest. If your car doesn't have ways to adjust seat belt height (I didn't notice mine did until I looked, after this course, because I'm short too) then a booster is a good idea.

Some people are ignorant and foolishly believe that seat belts are more harmful than helpful.

They buy into the dumb myth that seat belts can trap you in your car in case of a car accident.

Putting on your seat belt takes like 20 seconds.

Who actually refuses to invest such a tiny amount of time in themselves.....???!

What culture is this?

NP here: on vacation in Mexico, I've driven to many scuba diving sites in jeeps with no doors; no seat belts were used (once we even passed through a police check point). No one cares about seat belts from what I saw. And kids were usually seated in their mothers laps, not car seats).

That's known as a "Utah Air Bag"

My mother used to say it wrinkled her clothes.

+1. My grandfather was short and got into a car wreck. He died from injuries sustained from the seatbelt because it was sitting at the neck.

In addition to adult booster seats, you can get inexpensive seatbelt positioners.

I don't think these are technically approved for use.
