If you are in MoCo, I say Interfaith Clothing Center, hands down. Love them.

At Goodwill you can get a receipt and deduct it from your taxes.

You can do this regardless of where you donate. Just make sure you inventory everything before donating.

I give some to Interfaith work - I love it bc I see the homeless ppl in there myself.
I give some to good will, sometimes I go on craigslist and look for someone ISO and read the sad story and will send some stuff to them.
THe really nice stuff I either sell on craigslist or give away to friends in need of baby stuff.

So Others Might Eat (S.O.M.E.): (Website: www.some.org) Located on O Street N.W. (near N. Capitol Street). Unfortunately, donation dropoffs are on weekdays only. Receipts issued for tax purposes, of course.

I have donated to the Goodwill on Glebe Road in Arlington (open weekends), but prefer organizations that pass donations directly on to those who need them.

I donate to the Montgomery Thrift Shop in Bethesda. Proceeds go to 5 different charities (rotating depending on the day.) People who shop there appear to benefit from a nice selection of clothes, too.

I get letters from various charities that include a donation bag. I schdule a pick-up online, leave the bag outside on the pick-up dayte, and they leave a receipt.

For nicer stuff, I either freecycle or give to friends or friends of friends. Sometimes I use craigslist but find it to be a hassle for less expensive stuff.

Salvation Army. They will come and pick up the donations.

If you have any professional womens' clothing, Sport & Health is taking donations for homeless women trying to get back into the workforce. Gently used/new clothes, shoes, make up, jewelry, purses, anything to look nice on a job interview....you can drop off at any Sport & Health this month.

If the nanny doesn't want them and the consignment shop won't take them, then I put them in the nearest dumpster that has pictures of starving children on it.

OK, I'll admit it. I put them in boxes in my garage until some charity calls and tells me they are coming into my neighborhood for a pick-up. I was actually getting desparate and thought I'd have to actually - gasp - drive and drop them off and then NCC (National Children's Center?) called and said they would be in our neighborhood to pick up. I have no idea how I originally got on the list. Maybe someone in our neighborhood calls for occasional pick-ups, but it's great. It gives me incentive to do a quick clean-out. I do drive to GoodWill every once in awhile, but the one near us is always chaotic on weekends (good for them though, so many drop-offs).

With specialty clothes (maternity) I do freecycle or find friends, because I think maternity clothes just got lost in the shuffle at places like GoodWill.
