Fit Pregnancy magazine just rated the top cities to have a baby in and DC isn't even in the top 25! It came in #32, citing high cost, poor infant and maternal health, poor breastfeeding support, and other factors. Is anyone surprised?

No! Not at all, just look at the lack of hospital options in DC (when a place like Sibley is the best option you know tere is a problem), the cost of living in the city and the fact that there is only one (!) truly quality lactation resource in the city. It's definitely less than ideal. |
Doesn't surprise me at all. Even though DC has a number of truly women-centered care birth providers (fyi -- newman and reiter/hill are NOT among them!!!), the women in DC seem to be too afraid to take advantage of them. Thus we wind up with the 50% c/section rate in town, and abyssmal breastfeeding rates. And, Sibley has a completely underserved repuation -- the only reason people think it is the best is because it is in a wealthy neighborhood. There's not really any difference at all between GW, Georgetown, Sibley, etc. All subpar in terms of birth care, IMO. |
Is this poll not working for anyone? |
I'm not surprised at all, mainly because it's almost impossible to get decent childcare. All the places in the city I've called have waiting lists 1 and 1/2 years long. |
I tried the poll on a different post without success and another poster said that you had to be logged in to answer the poll. |
Doesn't surprise me at all. Decent childcare is hard to find, especially if you move here and have no network of friends. The ERs are crowded and unpleasant. |
I would agree that this isn't a particularly family-friendly or baby-friendly town sometimes, but I wonder if some of these stats apply to the DC area or just DC. I would think some of these things would be different if they focused on Maryland and Virginia's laws or rankings, too, and not just DCs.
That said, this looks pretty accurate. Pretty typical life in an expensive East Coast American city. |
It does appear you need to be logged in to be able to vote on a poll. |
Am not surprised that DC is low on the list, but am surprised that Philly and NYC are. Having lived in all 3 cities, I think NYC is the best place for having kids (if you have money - and before anyone thinks that sounds obnoxious, we left b/c we didn't) and Philly is great too. So, I think the study is flawed. For example - Stroller friendly is an F in NYC - very strange b/c it's the most stroller friendly place I've been. |
