| I just accepted a position in Falls Church, so we will be moving early next year. We have three kids, so we will be looking for a four bedroom house in a good school district. And I would like to keep my commute 40 minutes or less. Anyone have any recommendations for an affordable, family neighborhood where we can get a decent size house for under 500K? Thanks! |
| I would look in the Woodson HS district. |

OP, you should be more specific, decent size?
Basically you are looking at Chantilly with your price point.
|
| Burke or Springfield, although 500k will be tough. |
| 500K for a 4 bedroom SFH with decent schools is going to be incredibly, incredibly hard. Not even factoring in commute issues. |
| $500K for a 4BR is tough to find even in Chantilly... |
| Where do you live now, OP? Because I'm worried that COL in this area is going to be an unpleasant shock. |
| There are plenty of 4 BR houses under 500k much closer to Falls Church than Chantilly. They won't be new, some will have small rooms, and some will be townhouses. But you do not have to go that far out for a 500k house with four bedrooms. Some will have schools that some people here do not consider top ranked, though they will all be in the highly regarded Fairfax County school system. |

I know a young couple who just bought a 3-bed rambler in Manassas for $350. It's cute & updated inside. They commute to Tysons. I bet 4-beds are in OP's price range. Although I know nothing about the schools. And the commute to FCC might be an hour.
I would also look at Stafford or Sterling. Basically the commute is going to suck whichever direction you go, to get that SFH. |
links to listings? |
| I would avoid Falls Church and JEB Stuart High School areas. |

Just so you know OP, many of the SFH neighborhoods that have houses for $500k are going to be lots of blue collar, immigrant workers.

Yes, run, don't walk away from Sleepy Hollow or Lake Barcroft.......
03 Stuart grad... doing just fine. Our class left and went to UVA, William and Mary, VTech, Davidson, Yale etc.. all well along into their careers now... no reason to dismiss the area. Bought a well kept and renovated w/addition 4br/3ba rambler in Barcroft Hills / 22041 for $445K in August on a 1/3 acre lot. 22041/22042/22044 are some of the best values inside the beltway if you can tolerate your kids going to school with people from other countries. |
