Would you name a child...

a name with initials that spell out a word? Choosing a name has been an arduous process for us and we finally agreed on something that we both like very much....but the initials spell out a word. Not an offensive word or anything....just a word. What do you think? Would you do it?

If it's not a bad word or a word that can be used to tease your child, then there is no problem. My family actually used to call me by my initials growing up, and they didn't even spell a word! (but had a vowel, so it was pronounceable)

If just a word, no problem. What's the word?

I don't think I would worry about it...especially since anything monogramed (the only time you really see all three initials) would have the last letter in the middle and therefore not spell the original word.

OP here - okay, the word is EAR...could be used for teasing if the baby has big ears Still think it's okay?

Yes. Among others I know a "THE" and a "JEW" fortunately for the latter she is Jewish

I think that's fine. I had a friend whose initials spelled ASS, so they switched her first and middle name around to SAS. Still called her by her middle name, though. For most of my life, I've only used two initials. And if you do the old-fashioned style of monogramming with the last name letter in the middle eRa for example, it won't spell EAR.

Thanks for the reassurance. Seriously - agreeing on a name has been the most stressful part of the last 9 months. An earlier option was WAR which I was much less comfortable with.

Ha, that's funny! My initials are SAS, and I always joked that if my parents had switched my first and middle names, my initials would be ASS! I don't think it is that big a deal, but I do have a friend who always commented that she didn't like her initials - they are ARF. I have to say, my go to baby present is the LL Bean bag with the child's initials on it - so if I knew you, I might just do the child's first name or the old fashioned monogram to avoid spelling EAR. But it is really not that big a deal.

We haven't finalized a middle name yet but if we went with our choice, our baby's monogram would be GAF It made me think twice too!

Our DD will likely be a GRR or ERR... not ideal, but not offensive, so we'll just accept it.

(If this was a boy, a very real possibility would have been BAR!)

Somewhat unrelated antidote - but Michael J Fox's real middle name started with the letter "A," but he changed it because he didn't want to be called Michael A Fox. Just something else to think about if you're considering a middle name that starts with A. If your last name isn't a word, than it probably doesn't matter. Actually, it really doesn't matter either way. Just sharing a semi-funny story.

Ha. Since I was married, my initials now spell TON! But I like to think of it as "A TON of fun!"

My friend just had a baby girl whose intials are AOK--which I think is really cute.

I have a friend who really wanted to name his kid a particular name, which started with "S" -- but also wanted his dad's name to be the middle name, which would have given the kid the initials STD. He went with a totally different first name to avoid that.

I wouldn't think EAR would be an issue at all, though. My sister's initials are SAD and no one's ever mocked her for it.
