What do you do with a mattress after a kid pukes on it?

Anonymous
Dd puked straight liquids, felt like a gallon of apple juice straight on her mattress last night. We googled and tried to find some enzyme based cleaners but when we couldn't, I dabbed it as much as I could with paper towels and left it to dry. Ugh still smells today. Should I still pursue the enzyme cleaners? Will they work a few days after the fact?

That and leaving it out in the sun is worth a shot before you toss it.

Pet stores carry the enzyme cleaner. That stuff works. Leaving it out in the sun is good too, but not necessarily in the middle of November at these latitudes.

Whole Foods and MOMs often carries Bac Out too. And, I would put on a water resistant mattress pad for future accidents, then you can just throw it in the wash.

Make sure you get a waterproof mattress pad going forward

Burn it with Napalm.

You have to buy the enzyme cleaner at the pet store. Buy one that says extra strength on it. Pour, don't spray, the cleaner onto the mattress where it smells. The cleaner needs to reach every spot to get the smell out. Let it sit for a few hours and then aim a fan at it to dry it the rest of the way. After that, put a waterproof mattress cover on it. I don't know how old your kid is, but I've never met a parent that did not use a waterproof mattress cover on their kids' beds. My kids' mattresses would not be safe without one.

Sell it on Craigslist and list it as being in 'perfect condition'

Third. Dump a gallon on there. And read the directions. Most say it can take up to two weeks for the smell to go away and it may take more than one application.

Dang, 2 weeks! And my kid is 5. She's never wet the bed and usually pukes semi solids so this hasn't been a problem. I think we might need to get a new mattress and of course a mattress pad going forward! Thanks for the tips.

I'm impressed you've never needed a mattress pad -- my kid routinely spills enormous glasses of water all over his bed.

I hope your child is feeling better!

Goodness, we have a waterproof pad on OUR bed. Can't imagine not having one on my kids beds.

Yeah, we double up on the waterproofing by using a vinyl pad that is basically a giant bag that goes around the whole mattress and zips, and then a softer padded, but still waterproof one over the vinyl bag thing.

This is what we did when they were little.
